The Joke of Nascar..

It is racing. It is just not your version of racing. Racing someone to the end of the street is racing. Racing to finish a test first is racing.

I didn't mean that literally.
It's just my way of voicing displeasure over oval racing.

Meanwhile, I will rush home from work to catch the race tonight.

Fair enough. I assumed as much, I was just trying to make a point as many people say it's not real racing. And I say it is.

Nascar is completely real. Same as street racing, or video game racing.. or racing to see who picks up the tab first.

Problem is.. just because it's racing doesnt mean it's good racing.

I don't really disagree with you. But NASCAR is not about racing - IMO. It's about profit. It's a modern day gladiator type spectacle that they can pack into confined spaces and load them with fans.

It's entertainment and profits. Nothing more. Like all major sports.

I couldn't have said it better. The NFL is not about football, MLB is not about baseball and so on. The sport is the reason we watch, but to them it's just selling a product.

As far as road course vs. oval track racing goes I find r/c racing to be quite boring. Single file, hardly any passing. Yeah give me more of that. Even on restricter plate tracks at least you have some side by side racing.

Yes, one person's racing is not necessarily another's.

But I sort of agree with ThatRedWing. Some F1 races can get REALLY boring. And since road course racing usually doesn't have full track yellows, they can get awfully spread out with little passing. Maybe a driving purist prefers it that way, but I prefer passing. And say what you want about NASCAR, but it definitely has passing.

Actually, my favourite NASCAR events are the road courses though. Those big, overweight cars flying all over the place. Not every driver is good at road racing. NASCAR still throws plenty of full course cautions to bunch up the pack. And the cars are so even that you get lots of passing.
As much as I like the passing on the ovals, I find 4 or 5 hours of it a bit boring. Give me the last 50-75 laps and that would do me. It's fun to watch (for me). Just sit back, relax and don't take it too seriously.

BTW, former Formula 1 World Champion Jack Newtown (Jacques Villeneuve ;)) recently tested a couple of NASCAR vehicles. He is going to be driving the course next year (or maybe a couple later this year).

I think NASCAR used to be exciting, and great. Untill it became all about money. They changed the points system, and since then it has just sucked really bad. So I agree with everything that was said about it at this point.

Ok, time for my 2 cents worth on this topic. First of all, I will say that I have been a nascar fan my whole life, and yes in recent years I have found the races have been getting boring. I used to find the race at Bristol a very exciting race, but the most recent race at Bristol, with the Car of Tomorrow, was incredibly boring. Anyway, that's besides the point, I find I actually kinda like the new points system, and the "Chase for the Cup", which is the last ten races. I have found that "The Chase" has made it more exciting for those last ten races, because now someone isn't as likely to win the championship by landslide in the points, hell I remember drivers in recent years being so far ahead in points with still 3 - 5 races left in the season, that NASCAR just went ahead and gave them the championship that far in advance because they knew no one was going to catch up to them in the standings. I do agree that NASCAR needs to clarify the rulebook, but they do have a zero tolerance for cheating, which most sports are unable to say. Anyway to end my contribution to this topic, I am going to say if you don't like it, don't watch it, if you like F1/IRL/Moto GP/ or whatever, then watch that, and don't watch NASCAR, and also for those who only have watched it on television, don't knock until you have seen it live, completely different experience.

I just read in another thread you're getting married in a week. Now I understand why you popped off an anxiety ridden, anger laced thread about how stupid ignorant American "rednecks" are because NASCAR happens to occur in their country, all the while completely missing the boat on physics, aerodynamics, horsepower-to-weight ratios, contact patch areas on tires, downforce, traction control, etc. etc. But F-1, $100 million remote control races won by engineers in the pits is real racing? Fuck 'em both, neither of them holds a candle to Moto GP (although it is unfortunate Casey Stoner is running away with it) which is real racing.

Doesn't matter, you're getting married in a week, life as you know it has ended, you'll see. Now lock it up.
Thank You for Your words of wisdom,Sir.:)----I guess it is all over:1orglaugh-Actually,I am the happiest that I have ever been in My whole life.As for "life as You know it has ended, you'll see"--I am looking foreward to starting a new era in My life and plan to be the best Husband I can be.This is gonna be My best years ever,I predict.I may have negative opinions on certain sports, but I have a positive outlook on the things that are really important.Thank You for Your blessings,Peter.;).

One last note and then I will leave this thread.Ax3c called Me an asshole for putting down the SOUTH,and I did no such thing.I was born southern and I am proud of it.The gentleman did not read all of My posts and failed to recognize that I never mentioned the SOUTH once!--I respect opinions when they are right and I dismiss them when they are wrong.You,Sir...are wrong, very wrong.--Think before You post and leave out the obscenities and insults.Thank You Sir....Ax3c---have a wonderful night and think before You post.

When I said I think they needed clarification with the rulebook, I wasn't just talking about the rules that control the technical aspects of the cars, although that is pretty bad also from what I hear. I was also referring to the way they handle situations out on the track and the way they hand out punishments to the teams. Not only are they inconsistent, but also like I said it seems sometimes they just make something up as they go along. It's always been that way. Some people have said they wouldn't be surprised if the NASCAR rulebook had some secret "except in rare circumstances" clause written into it that lets them do what they want. There are too many times where somebody will get busted for "aggressive driving" that was just as bad what somebody was doing in another race where they did nothing. (Not to mention they don't say what aggressive driving is) In the bush series race in Montreal where Robbie Gordon blew up part of it was the fact they really screwed him over. Not only did they punish him for spinning a car out while doing nothing to the two other people that did the same thing on almost that same lap, they made him restart in like in 14th place (or around there I can't remember) after somebody spun him out during the caution when he was running second at worse. Then they didn't even punish the person that did it. Another example I can think of is at Daytona this year when Harvick just edged out Mark Martin. There was a wreck on the last lap and for some reason they didn't wave the caution while they would do so in 99.9% of situations just like that at any other time. They said it was because the there was no safety issue even though it sure looked like there were cars spinning out in the middle of the track behind him. The decision probably changed the outcome of the race. (I think I know why they did it. It was probably similar to basketball where referees will intentionally not call a penalty in the closing minutes of an important close game because they don't want to "be the reason the game ended that way". What they fail to realize is that a non-call is just as game affecting as making the proper call) I can think of a some other things like the time Jr. spun out on purpose because he needed to make a pit stop and he needed a caution to keep from loosing positions. When NASCAR found out about it the penalty he received in loss of points wasn't even the difference he saved by pulling the stunt in the first place. In fact until this year when they wanted to start making an example of people superstars weren't usually punished as bad as everybody else unless they were somebody like Tony Stewart who could keep getting under the skin of the NASCAR higher ups. The list of weird things NASCAR rules on, even in race, goes on and on.

They just need to take every judgment call possible out of it and make the rules understandable. They need to be consistent and apply it evenly to everybody. If they need to change it later, even after that race if some unseen but very important issue came up, they can do so. If you took some of the things they do and applied that mentality to other sports it would be the umpire in baseball giving a batter 4 strikes or a referee giving a team in football 5 downs just because they felt like doing it at the moment.

It's 'ALL" about money!!!!

Every pro sport in America is about nothing but the almighty dollar.

Big-time sponsors buying space on a race car so their product can be viewed for approx. 4 hrs. during a race.

Just a matter of time when Madison Avenue invades ***-wee sports, offering contracts and tv commercials to little ones...

Heaven Help us all !!!

When NASCAR took away racing back to the yellow flag, they took all the ***** out of the sport. They have made it "too safe" in my opinion.

If NASCAR is staged then Dale Jr., Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart would be the only ones to win a race. Jr. hasn't even been in "The Chase" for two years. Maybe I'm over thinking this but if I was going to STAGE something I would have my biggest star in the playoffs.

100% correct!!!

What I dont understand about NASCAR, is that the cars are all identical.

So how come some drivers seem to always win and some dont? And every damn race, it always seems to be the same mofos in top 10 positions going around the track.

Peace.

I prefer the various forms of sports car racing, SCCA GT/Touring, FIA GT, GTCC (DTM), JGTC, LeMans, Rolex, V-8 Supercar, ect... But NASCAR racing is so much more accessible to watch live, The Chicago Speedway is a 30 minute train ride away. The closest Sports Car track is Elkhart Lake 3 hours away or Indy another three hours away in the opposite direction.

I need to see race cars and NASCAR is the easiest way to see them. Racing is never boring to me, but I'm just a gearhead.
