The boringness and negativity of television series

Is is my imagination or are (most) TV series becoming more boring and negative over the last ten years?

If I remember shows from the 80's till the end of the 90's, like Star Trek, Alf, Friends, Airwolf, A-team, Miami vice, 21 Jumpstreet, etcetera, in comparrison to Lost, Heroes, Trueblood, CSI, I noticed that a lot the characters from the series of the last ten years are much more close to having a burnout or something....There's a negative vibe everywhere...

Already from the beginning of Friends till it's end it is quite noticable that the six main friends start of are rested people in a busy life and end up with noisy boring characters who are burned out. Remember Monica Gellar starting a nice woman ending up as a screamer?

Also comparing the 80's and 90's to the 60's and the 70's it's also noticable that the 80's and 90's were closer to burnout.

I am trying to find out a nice TV show to follow which is not older than 5 years, and all I find is crap: mostly because the main characters always suck. They always have problems; no money, no love, no fun. Why call soaps series...eh...soap series if all other series become soaps too?

I think I am going to watch Star Trek Enterprise, that crew really comes close to some positive vibes...

Quite a depressing trend, indeed. I heard Disney is currently producing The Suite Life of Zack & Cody In Rehab , Crack Whore Musical and the Miley Cyrus special Hannus Montanus about a girl struggling with her gender identity and deciding to get sex change surgery.

Try Sons of Anarchy not too bad of a show.

As far as sitcoms go I like Big Bang Theory, reruns of Frasier, and reruns of Home Improvement and Yes, Dear.

Sons of Anarchy is a good show I like. However I am unsure what you speak of concerning negative vibes. You saying they are no longer family oriented or you just don't like TV now?

As far as tv shows are, get rid of about 99% of the reality shows and keep the ones were you have washed up musicians or actors picking and choosing strippers and amateur porn actresses.

The problem is that as time as gone on the last 10-15 years people that have made entertainment have either fallen too in love with making everything darker and edgier, making a show have some sort of fake pseudo-complexity, making a show that's the billionth version of a doctor, lawyer, cop show, making something that's yet another reality television show, or finding out something could be a good and people like so they then can't resist the urge to drive it into the ground and milk it for all it's worth instead of letting it's long running plotline develop nicely the way they wanted to before hand.

That's why I collect classic series from way back when they were still great.

It's rare that I actually watch tv because I just download the shows I like. Advertising has become so aggressive and annoying, I can't stand it anymore.

Pro tip: Watch commercials on mute. It's hilarious.

This is because we only remember the great ones. For ever Star Trek: The Next Generation, there was a Misfits of Science. For every Cheers, there was a Small Wonders. As the years go by, we forget the pure shit, we remember the greats. Twenty years from now, we will be wondering why we no longer see great shows such as Lost, Fringe, Monk, 30 Rock, Futurama, 24, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Modern Family, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter...

Of course, by then, we will have forgotten about Cavemen, The Class and the thousands of trash reality shows.

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
I still wonder why American Idol continues to exist. Yay, more mediocre voices that will be auto tuned anyway.

This. With the exception of Carrie Underwood, who could sound like Roseanne and I'd still watch her videos, has any talent emerged from this worthless cesspool of a show?

It's a box that tells you to buy Axe or else you'll never be on a deserted island with pussy flocking to you like the sound of Capistrano.

I don't watch much TV anymore other than reruns of Futurama, Family Guy and The Simpsons, oh and The Vampire Diaries, all this reality tv stuff that is everywhere is crap. When I had comedy central Frasier, King Of Queens and Two And A Half Men were always watchable. A good comedy we had over here is the inbetweeners, not well advertised but as funny as hell. Watch it here for free on Youtube (after the adverts)

Oh and check out these clips of Summer Heights High, a fantasic Aussie parody of a reality show set in a high school

^ Summer Heights High is marvellous. They need to make more of that.

There's loads of decent TV around, you're just not looking hard enough. Everyone always complains about the quality of 'x' in the era they are in, but will no doubt look back on that era 10 years down the line and spend it reminiscing about that time.
