I think to name only one band is clever because we'd all list hundreds of the same bands. I myself can't name just one, so I'll give only two.Total tie for me

Also my fave version of this tune. Just rocks.

The Chuck Berry Band.

Nice job with the links Montreal.

You have to give an option of "other"
Otherwise it's just your opinions and no option to differ
My choices are Coldplay, Muse and Radiohead. A LOT of people would agree with me. Yet none of them are in your choices.

Radiohead should be included. Muse is good but they haven't really caught on in the US like they have in other parts of the world...but Coldplay I'd consider to be more of a pop band than a rock band.

I **** Pearl Jam and all the other Seattle crap that ruined rock scene in the nineties.
Up until then things were developing real nicely, there was a huge load of great albums published in the very beginning of the last decade -and that Nirvana album went along with them very well - wow yet another new great rock band with exellent album to hit the charts!
But then....oooohhh nooooo what is this horrible stinky stuff they are pouring on us...and why can`t any good bands get record deals anymore.....**** me up from this nightmare....!
I really learned to **** Seattle and people from there....yep, absoluttely everything from there. If I had the power to decide, it would have been the first strike target for Russian nukes :ak47:

Red Hot Chili Peppers is also another ******* from my nightmares of the nineties.

U2 - never liked `em that much. Although in all honesty, perhaps they might not be that bad choice here, if that "active" means that we are talking about bands in their current shape....

Aerosmith - I like their older stuff, but not enough to choose them in this poll.

R.E.M - not my cup of tea, besides, are they really active today?

Guns N` Roses - once they were the greatest band in the world, but now it`s really just Axl Rose solo project, not a real band. Or at least not real GN'R.

Metallica - Black Album is still among my favorites, and everything they did up until then was first class stuff. Also probably the most influental of these bands. But I really don`t like the studio albums they`ve done after the Black one and would never vote for current Metallica in a poll like this. Unless it was for the greatest live band, their concerts are still good.

So Rolling Stones gets my vote, they still have it and you can`t really place them very low on any of the points you mentioned.

This is also the most pro-American list I have ever seen. Pearl Jam, Guns N Roses, Metallica and Aerosmith are next to nothing in most countries of the world.

They are among the biggest bands here in Europe, and I would think the same goes for Japan and most South American countries. And probably Oz & New Zealand.

That's actually a load of crap. I've been to 22 European Countries in the last few years and I lived most of my life in England. I know for a fact that Metallica are a medium band, Pearl Jam are small if not insignificant, and Aerosmith are really no-names.

Seriously.

Well ok, I really don`t know much about what`s going on with Pearl Jam these days, but at least they used to be a big name.
Aerosmith is the best selling rock band of all time, and more than half of their sales have come from outside of the US. But if they would come up with a new album today, then maybe I wouldn`t bet on it to rule the charts, those days are gone.
But to say they are a no-name here is a bit too much really...
Metallica a medium band? What would you call a big name then?

Down, are the best band in the world at the moment. IMO

Ive already said from that list The Rolling Stones fit all the criteria.

Maybe I exaggerated how SMALL Aerosmith are outside America.

But if a band has half it's sales in America it is NOT a major world *****.

There are 300 million people in America.
There are 7 billion people in the world.

Therefore, a major GLOBAL artist should sell ten times (at least) what it sells in America in the whole world.

Nope, most of the people on this planet don`t listen to this kind of music at all. The market area is North America, South America, Europe, Japan and Australia & New Zealand. Other parts of the world don`t make a significant difference to their overall sales.
The most important is North America, because there`s lots of English speaking wealthy consumers, who can spend lots of money in records.
There`s more people in Europe, but there`s also lots of different languages spoken over here. And every language region has it`s own music scene, where these international big names have to compete against local bands that may be huge in their own language area, while still non heard of anywhere else.
The same goes for Japan and South America, plus there`s also lots of poor people in South America who have more important things for spending their money.

For Coldplay, U2, Radiohead, and so on, that is definitely true of all of their albums. Even REM, for some of their albums.

However, look at the sales of the LAST THREE Metallica albums and Aerosmith albums, worldwide. Then look at the sales of the last three Coldplay, U2 and Radiohead albums.

I rest my case. Coldplay, U2, and Radiohead, are WAY bigger, and WAY more active and WAY more popular, worldwide, than any of the grandpas.

Although I suppose U2 are getting towards grandpa status now. Yet they are as big as they ever were. None of the American grandpas you mentioned can say that except MAYBE RHCP, who aren't quite grandpas yet.

Fox

UK is not the whole world either ;)
Radiohead and Coldplay are the "local bands" in UK that are HUGE over there, but because their language happens to be what it is, they have gained big international status too. Unlike the "local bands" from other European countries that use their own language. That`s the way it tends to go, but they are not as big in other parts of Europe as they are in UK.
I don`t mean to say that they aren`t big international names too, but they aren`t as big in other countries as they are in Britain. So if you just look at it from UK point of view, it`s really not much different than looking just what goes on in the USA.

ok, ok

my bad (not putting an "other" option)

when i made the list, i really tried to think "globally" and not for my own criteria. and take in account that there's only 10 choices max. in the poll

if i could, i'd include:
- Rage Against The Machine
- Radiohead
- Smashing Pumpkins

Terrible list IMO. The early 90's bit earlier was actually a joke. RHCP is the only band up there that i like. Pearl Jam and U2 are decent at best, to me anyway. Muse should definitely be up on that list as well as Radiohead. I love Muse and got to see them live in Pensacola, their live show is incredible!

lol calling GNR (Active) is laughable at best. You mean Axl and he's rent-a-band. I have a underground copy of Chinese Democracy, and it sucks. and I consider a band active if they actually tour more then 5 major cities every few years because there singer is a flake.

IMO I don't consider any of the bands in your poll as active!! the stones are cool; U2 is cool; GNR is cool; bands that I think deserve honorable mention that you didn't include in your poll are: black sabbath; tool; a perfect circle; pantera; marilyn manson; and although I didn't like them you can add nirvana to that list as well.... but I will vote for one of the bands just because I like and respect them!!

but IMO the best active band that meets all of your criteria would have to be; Rage Against the Machine!! absolutely awesome band!! they were the first of their kind!! respected by fans world wide; they actually have a cult following; their albums are collector's items; their live shows are as intense as they get!! their importance to the world is unmeasurable because they are a politically oriented and motivated band; that even had the FBI afraid of what they had the capability of achieving if they wanted too!! they could spawn an uprising!! well thats my 2 cents!! take care!!

i totally agree with that. Pearl Jam rules!

In their current state, I'd probably say none of them. They all were great at some point and all have released great albums, but they have lost it. Possibly Metallica, we will find out in September.

Off the list, I don't know. My personal opinion would be Queens of the Stone Age. (Dave Grohls favourite band also, before you diss my choice ;)
