RE1 was the best to me.It was one of those games that was a complete game changer in a genre that was for the most part,non existent at the time. The only other survival horror games that I can think of that came before it were Haunted House on Atari 2600 and Friday The 13th on NES.

I haven't played Code Veronica since the Dreamcast version but yeah, if you never played the other RE's you will have a tough time. The controls are also known as "tank controls" due to the slow, heavy feeling of the controls but good god every time I play the pre-RE4 games I get hit with major nostalgia and fear, (don't judge, I was in junior high when RE1 came out)
