There's a large television broadcast union that organises a singing contest every year, each country subscribing to the union submits an act, all the countries vote for their favourites and the winner hosts it next year. Because it's a mix of so many European, west/central Asian and north African cultures it gets really campy and ridiculous. It's awesome.

Every country in Europe competes to see who can send the most horrible musical abomination possible to a country. Europe votes. Whoever wins gets the contest in their country the next year. I guess it's supposed to unify us somehow but all that usually ends up happening i me being reminded of why I never want to visit Eastern Europe. Some good songs have come out of it, like ABBA's "Waterloo", but mostly it's gems like this:
This is the song that won last year. it's a decent pop song, but like I said, loreen rubs me the wrong way for some reason.
Ah yes, back in the good ole days...

Euroviion songs don't sound like normal pop songs. It's weird.
I like Finland! It's in my top 10 
Apart from the musical individuality that has been completely lost in the last ten to fifteen years, the thing I'm missing the most is all the different languages you could listen to during the ESC. Actually, most countires singing in English nowadays is part of the musical demise as well as any glimmer of individuality is squashed and then meshed up so that we've got 20 something pop songs you can hear on the radio all day long, every day of the week. But oviously I'm part of a dying breed of ESC fans as people still enjoy this farce. Anyhow, as a music enthusiast, I'm opting for the San Remo festival, it's only Italian songs of course, but the quality of the music is not even comparable to the same old same old ESC ****.

Dont think she actually made it to the ESC... but holy crap.... I am ashamed of both my Swedish and Finnish heritage here.
