Taxi Cab Etiquette

It's no too often I have to call a cab for transportation, however yesterday I had to.
To the point, if a cab gives you transportation from point A to points B & C, should you pay what is already owed at point B before you exit the cab?... and then when you return to the same cab, pay for the transportation from points B to C separately?
I thought about this after I exited the cab on Saturday after entering a place of business (my point B), the fact that any lowlife could ditch out on paying his or her fare by simply not returning to the cab. I was going to ask the driver about the proper terms of payment but his english was difficult to understand so I didn't.

Looking back, maybe it isn't such a good idea to pay between points because when the cab arrived to pick me up at my point A, I noticed that the register was set at $3.50 before we moved an inch, having said that, if I were to pay my fare at point B before leaving the cab, it would seem to me that the driver could reset the register charging me another $3.50 all over again for transportation from points B to C (?) Who knows? :dunno:

Anyway, my total fare was $21.00 and I gave the driver $27.00.
Was I cool or what?

if it was me, i would have waited to give him everything until i was done. that depends on how long you are at point b. if you are just running in, he should wait for your ass.

you certainly tipped him well enough.

If they're waiting, you're paying...so it seems to me, whether you pay or not, you will still have incurred some additional charges, and chances are, the driver has become pretty good at figuring out who is a risk when it comes to bailing without paying....he would have asked you to settle up as you went, if you seemed shady. As far as your tip goes...I can't see where almost 30% is anything but VERY fair. I'm not sure what the standard is, but I would guess you exceeded it.

Where I am at, the only metered taxis are the ones that pick up off of the streets. The ones you call for will tell you how much your trip will be before they send one out. There is a charge for waiting time if you are going to make a stop. $5 was a nice tip. I can't believe it when some people don't tip. I asked a driver about this and he said it happens more often than I think.

I would've waited to pay him at the end. Easier with the small change (where applicable), and it doesn't count as two trips. You tipped him well. Would've probably done the same thing especially if you made him wait a while, but I figure $25 even would've been plenty if the stop didn't take long.

I have driven a cab in my day and your tip was very
generous. The problem w/ the question is taxicab
"rules" vary wildly from municipality to state to country.

As a driver offering to pay at point B would be great, but,
If you look "OK" it's not a big deal.

Anything above 15% tip is GREAT. When I use a cab, and the driver
does a good job I tip %20.

15 to 20 percent tip is my usual rule. i am surprised the cab driver let you out without paying. they usually reset the meter after they drop you off at the first location.
