System upgrade question

I want to finally install Windows 7 on my laptop. I'm currently on Vista.

Now, do I have to save and secure all my data on an external drive and deinstall all programs before installing 7 or can I just go and install 7 over vista without doing anything prior to it?

Just a remark: how important is this data to you that you are willing to take the risk NOT to save this on an external drive?

From your statement, it appears that you have a decision to make:

1) Should I backup my personal data before upgrading?

2) Maybe if I upgrade my operating system, I may lose all my personal data. What the fuck, here it goes... Oh ****!

Just choose one or the other.

Remember this quote from the movie "Dirty Harry" (1971):

Harry Callahan: I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

If your just installing the upgrade version, everything should be just fine. The problem is when you have to go from XP to 7 because then you have to zap the hard drive

You should keep your porn on an external hard drive, it is easier to hide and no one will ever be able to find anything snooping on your lap top.

I just tried to upgrade it with the version I have. It didn't work. It said I have to restart and use the custom installation. I guess I'll lose everything then if I don't back it up huh? :(

Yes because that means you have to fromat the hard drive so you will lose everything. Your best bet is to get an external drive to transfer everything too

I know it will probably mean a lot of work but TBH, having a fresh/clean install can be highly beneficial at times. ;)

im kinda shocked anyone uses vista. Windows biggest flop...
I think it's a photo finish between Vista & ME.

FYI. While backed up everything on my external drive, everything remained in place when I upgraded to 7 from Vista.
