Looks like you're right. They're called 'braces' in the UK, and garters are suspenders.

Just to clarify....I started the thread, and by "suspenders" I meant "garters". The things that hold stockings up from a belt, not over the shoulder!

The over-the-shoulders are "braces" over here in the UK, correctamundo!
