Superman has been a fictional character for 81 years now. Even if you somehow discount the large amount of different writers of various skill that have did material about him in that time over decades of social change that all had different takes on him, there is also the factor that he has a large amount of alternate universe versions of him during that time. Some of those alternate versions are awful. It's a consequence of having a intellectual property as old and as popular as he has been.
Still by an overwhelming amount he was overall been an icon of goodness during his existence. Even most of the time adjusted relative to the time period the stories were written at he usually ends up better than most.

All about perspective, and all about looking at what a singular being could decide (Or in an *********** rush) to do, which is bad enough, if the being has access to weaponry of mass destruction, like in the almost daily killings in the USA.
Now extrapolate this, look at what a being could do, if things go bad. If he would begin wiping out cities, burst a couple of nuclear power plants, or seek amd destroy the nuclear missiles etc. Lay waste on Washington DC.
As Batman saw it in the "Dark Knight", it is definitely possible, and thus it would have to get prepared for

I think one of the more interesting things about Superman is that with all the power he has at the end of the day he really would just rather be a normal person. Being Superman is more something he does because he feels it's his duty to do good than anything else, and he would much rather just have everybody in the world get along and live out his life being Clark Kent. He's an ***** that's very human in all the ways that matter most.
Think about it, he is, even in the DC universe with other superpowered beings, so powerful of a character he could literally **** almost everybody on the planet if he wanted to. In a way almost every individual on Earth lives only because he lets them. Yet, in a world where absolute power corrupts absolutely he can resist that. Other people see him as a virtual god when he flies around and can shoot lasers out of his eyes, but most importantly he doesn't see himself that way. If anything he sees everybody else, all the normal people, as more important than him. So great is his conviction and the beliefs in truth and justice, and his love everybody else he is downright willing to die for them in service to them. He will also go to insane lengths not to **** even very evil people.
I used to not like Superman. I thought he was boring because he had a silly amount of powers, but then over time I started changing my mind as time went on. While his power level and the variety of things he can do is still silly, I found that was not why I ended up liking him. I don't like Superman the set of powers. I ended up liking Superman the ideal, the ideal of what an actual hero is. I like that he is a black and white character in an ever changing world with more shades of grey about morality, and he doesn't rationalize or make excuses to go the easy path or commit evil like so much of the world we live in. I like that he believes in truth and justice even in an age where anti-heros have gained more popularity.
I'd like to think that his being sent by Jor El to the Kents wasn't an accident. When he could so easily have become an unspeakably evil tyrant he ended up being Superman instead, and it's entirely do to the values his adoptive parents gave him to care about everybody else.
