Steeler's Quarterback

It is true shame that he got hurt.... He is paid millions to play football in a TEAM atmosphere, he did let his teammates down. Kellen Winslow, Cohwer and Bradshaw told him the issues with riding a motorcycle under a NFL contract that forbids dangerous activites outside of football, plain and simple. Also thank god he did not have a wreck like Jay Williams of Duke fame and Bulls infamy. There is a very good chance if he wore full faced helmet he would not of sustained so many facial injuries as well.

I wish him a quick recovery..... He is a big boy and I am sure he will deal with it with humble class..........

Idiots not wearing helmets affects (you Americans) more than you have said so far... http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/midwest/2006/06/06/69203.htm

That example is for Michigan, but you get the point of how the accidents cost you money. Some may argue that all accidents do, but the stats on helmet use are as infallible as stats can be. (imo)

"Head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes. (U.S. Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, State Legislative Fact Sheet, 1999)"

Woah, woah, woah, people calm the fuck down! First off let me just say a big:thefinger to Bonkers69! He's not a fuckin idiot because he didn't wear a helmet. I dunno if he had a motorcycle license or not...if he knew how to ride then he knew! He also knew the risk of riding in the first place with or without a helmet! As a biker myself it pisses me the fuck off when someone says "he's an idiot for not wearing a helmet" He's an adult and it's a personal decision to wear a helmet or not. I agree it is a chance your taking by not wearing one, but by no means are you an idiot for not. I don't wear one myself so I suppose now I'm a fuckin idiot huh? I dare you, the next time you see someone on a bike without a helmet to call them a fuckin idiot and see what happens! Now THAT would be a pretty fuckin idiotic thing to do!
That's my:2 cents:

lost all his teeth but one, broke a sinus cavity, farctured both cheek bones, 9 inch cut oin his head a possibly a knee injury. Yeah he will be back in thime for the first game, if it was to be played in la la land.

He only lost two teeth. I guess maybe for the next 2 months, thats where he'll stick the straw for his meals...

"Doctors did not discuss Roethlisberger's condition in detail, at the request of his family, but the quarterback's only major injuries were to his face: a broken upper and lower jaw, a loss of two teeth, a broken nose, broken facial bones and various cuts and bruises."

Ok, he's not an idiot, but it was pretty dumb that he didn't wear a helmet. He's lucky that his brains weren't splattered all over the hood of that gals car.
I do wish him a speedy recovery though too.
I'm just glad he's not a statistic.

I can't beleive people are saying things as if he deserved what he got. I'm no Steeler's fan so it's not like I'm biased, but come on, SOMEBODY HIT HIM. I mean, wtf, it was accident. Although wearing a helmet would definately have been a better idea, he didn't "DESERVE" to get destroyed just because he wasn't wearing one. That's like saying you deserve to get AIDS because you happen to not be wearing long sleeves and accidentally opened a little scab on your arm and then someone's AIDS rich blood from a little cut on their arm just happen to fall on your arm while passing one another in the subway. It's a freak accident, but it doesn't mean you DESERVE it.

Very true, Cower and Bradshow both talked to him last season about not riding, and riding without a helmet. I bet he wishes he had listened now.

oh so true!

If I get into a car I wear a seatbelt. I don't like motorcycles that much because I think they are too inherently dangerous, but if I am going to get on a bike I wear a helmet. I just think it is the smart thing to do. To be honest, yes I think not doing those things is dumb. To neglect to do something that takes a minimum of effort to help better protect you is foolhardy. With that said I don't think it is somebody else’s job to protect you from yourself and it definitely shouldn't be the government's. If people are afraid it will cost society more money in medical bills or whatever the answer for that is to quit reimbursing people who make poor choices in life like that or making them pay it back instead of going to the level of having to baby-sit everybody because you think they might hurt themselves. I wish what happened to Ben didn't happen, but he is a grown adult, he made his choice, and now he has to live with the consequences of it. I can recognize that was his choice to make as poor as I think it was.

Is he an idiot? Well, I can hardly call any QB who leads an NFL team to a Superbowl win an idiot. It takes more than brawn and skill to do that. It definitely takes some smarts...

...but...

...I think it would be pretty difficult to argue that his choice to not wear a helmet, and I'll defend his and any riders right not to wear one if they choose (especially if they also choose to sign their organ donor card ;) ), was a pretty idiotic choice to make.

I mean come on, if he was wearing his helmet his head and face wouldn't be all busted up!

And NO, he didn't deserve what happend to him, how could he?

Idiot? Definitely not. Idiotic move...CLEARLY!

Best of luck guy...here's hoping you have a speedy recovery!

The question I have to ask is how does this affect his salary next year, if at all? Someone said that he signed a contract stating that he could ride motorcyles if he chose, but that is still contraty to the NFL's policy isn't it? Plus, if he was riding without a valid permit then might that legally put him in a situation where he is legally liable for his own injuries and in violation of any deal with the Steelers or the NFL? I mean, the Steelers, if they were dicks (and probably won't be I think) could challenge having to pay him if he ends up not playing this season.

But again, he's clearly NOT an idiot!

I'm no Steelers fan but cut him some slack. Blame the stupid fucking state of Pennsylvania for not having a helmet law. We all do things that, either knowingly or unknowingly, put ourselves in harm's way every day. He's no different. I'm certain he's learned a tough lesson from this and, fortunately for him, has a second chance going for him. I wish him a total and speedy recovery. Get well soon, Ben.

Take a Hit, Spunker!
Now I couldn't stop by here and not post anything on this story, especially me being from a certain Pennsylvania town with 5 Super Bowl titles and soon to be 6 next year. Ok Big Ben made a mistake. Hell, any of us who's in our 20's have made some idiotic choices in our lives. I don't think there's no such thing as an absolute idiot. If that was the case, this whole world wouldn't be here. If doing idiotic things is a crime, I'm guilty as charged, the same as Ben. Oh and if you hate him because he did ride his bike without a helmet, Penn. law now states it's not mandatory you wear a helmet, but I prefer you do especially a person who's QB'ing my team to another title this year.

I too am a big steelers fan

Any of you ever done something stupid or something that your ashamed of ?

Get well Big Guy we need to get started on the other hand:D

Not to mention....Im from Ohio and its a tough life being a fan

So many posts to quote. So little time. I have nothing against Ben. I am a Buckeye fan and was PISSED when John Cooper let him get away to Miami, OH. Instead we had to suffer through the Steve Bellsari years. I am just to answer some things that are posted above. First of all there is a helmet law in Pennsylvania. It states that if you haven't had you motorcycle license for 2 years you must ride with a helmet at all times. All Ben has is an expired permit. He didn't have choice to make. He was supposed to have a helmet on by law. So it isn't the state's fault. Second to the people who state that because you don't wear a helmet and other bikers don't wear helmet it is ok for him to break the law and even be on a bike much less ride without one. Guess what you aren't a NFL quarterback. He has a higher responsibility to the team and the people that have invested millions of dollars in him. Even if he does back it back for game one. (Which I hope he does) he will be rusty because of all the camps and practices he misses. His timing will be off.
As far as the accident not being his fault... ok he didn't cause the accident but he WILL get cited for riding without a license and without a helmet. Point... he shouldn't have been there to hit. For you guys that ride, you know that you have to ride defensively. I can't count how many times I have been cut off because people don't use their mirrors or look back to see if a bike is there. Pulled out in front of because peole think cars have the right of way over bikes. I'm 35 and got my first bike at 16. I consider myself a very experienced rider, but if I am going to get gas in my bike down the street and back. I wear a helmet, because whether it is your fault or not when a automobile and a motorcycle cross paths it is usually curtains for the bike rider. Normally due to head injury. If you meet the state laws requirements where you live it is your choice to wear a helmet or not.... it is also your choice to bang a skank without a condom or or play Russian Roulette.
Anyways, good luck and a speedy recovery to you Ben. I hope you have learned a lesson. Before he made the statement "If you know what you are doing you don't need a helmet." I think he found out the hard way that everyone else on the road needs to know what they are doing before it is safe to ride without noggin protection.

Dont take things to personal legzman, just a topic of conversation, and yes myself being a biker i wear a helmet, and in my opinion if you dont wear one thats your own fault if they are scooping your brains off the highway with a shovel.

I love these discussion boards. It gives people a chance to come on here and feel all warm and fuzzy about themselves as they tell everybody how they wear a seat belt, that bikes are dangerous but by golly whenever they get on one they wear a helmet, always use a condom, only an idiot would do that, I bet he's sorry now, he should have listened, blah blah fucking blah.

"He's lucky he's not dead or even worse"? What the fuck is that? How about "He's VERY UNLUCKY to happen to be riding on a street where idiots from the end of civilization (Maine) pull out in front of you while you're obeying the laws of the road and riding to the safest of your potential"? (okay, he didn't have a motorcycle license, NEWS FLASH - No one does).

Has anyone thought of the other side of the coin? For example, "I'll bet that fucking dipshit driver from Maine feels real lucky he didn't kill Big Ben or injure him even worse". or "That sumbitch is lucky the police aren't releasing the name of the driver or he'd be dead meat." I'll bet those mean motherfuckers in Pittsburgh are talking alot about that, not how stupid Ben was to be riding a Hayabusa with no fucking helmet.

If you're gonna ride a bike, no matter where you do it you have to wear a helmet. If you ride on dirt, you're gonna eventually fall off (or you're not having ANY fun). If you ride on the street, there will be other people around you and other people, as we all know, are idiots.

I have no idea why the hell PA ever repealled their helmet law. I'm all for the government staying out of our lives so they should have just left the law alone. Also, Ben should have listened to Cowher and Bradshaw but he didn't, he took a chance that 99.9% of the time you get away with but it didn't work out this time.

But how the hell in any way can anyone say he was "lucky"?

Holy Shit, great post Eddie - I did not know the intracacies of that helmet law but that seems to be an even better argument that they should have never fucked with it.

He is pretty fucking stupid!! He's a professional athlete and has a responsibility not only to himself but to the rest of his teammates and most importantly the fans. By trying to be "cool" he could have seriously jeapordized the franchise. The guy is the Steelers now that Bettis is gone. And is selfish act could have cost a lot of people money and heartache. If I was paying $2-4K for season tickets every year I wouldn't want my franchise player doing anything that could cost the team another championship. Look what happened to Kellen Winslow jr., he may never be able to play football again because of his motorcycle accident. How many fans are pissed off about that. He was supposed to be the next great TE and he's played in less then 5 games in 2 seasons. These people need to think that there are people all over who look up to them and count on them. What they do in their personal life is their business but use some goddamn common sense. IMO he got what he deserved for not wearing a helmet. He's damn lucky he still can play football. Next time he may end up dead or worse.
