how do I find out if there is anything that might be on/in my computer? dirty photos or links that are filed away from clicking on something in the past?

Some spyware hides itself very well. This is because they infect the Windows "NT kernel" and core Windows libraries, intercepting disk and other service calls so it doesn't show up when scanning programs look for it. Running as an user without administrator privileges helps, although Window XP/Vista give you what is known in legacy Windows NT days as "Power User" level, which still has some of that access.
Oh, that's different. That's just your history and temporarily files.
Firefox has a "Privacy" setting with a checkbox that says "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" that lets you clear out various things. You can also check a box so it prompts you whether or not you want to.
Unlike MS IE and a lot of 3rd party software (of which may have spyware as well), it really does clear out everything for Firefox. That's because Firefox isn't so integrated into the OS and registry. I find most IE privacy tools still miss something that can't be removed.
I have that option checked off in Firefox its very helpful...I personally avoid IE...I prefer pretty much everything about firefox, the add-ons etc...
