Spotting Eta Carinae?

^^

True. Within 'normal people' budgets, there is a pretty low ceiling to the quality of equipment one can afford. I'll try my local area for access to better stuff, if not...I'll just strain my eyes really hard. :D

I wouldn't rush but do a lot of research to get the biggest bang for the buck. 10-12 years ago when I got interested in it, $1200 would buy you something really nice. I'm sure you can easily spend $3000 or more and buy a good telescope and accessory tracking system.

You Might also try to find enthusiast groups or clubs and get involved with that until you can make a good decision on what to buy.

Sound advice. I was reading about Planets outside our SS earlier. Some cool stuff. I saw this Discovery Channel ish once about a mythical world called Darwin 4. Awesome stuff. ******* it if you havent seen it.

Something on it 1am EST 10/6/08 "Hubble's Amazing Universe", on the Nat Geo channel about 22 minutes into the hour.

I remember my days dating a buxom young female astronomer. The date went horribly wrong when I asked her, "Can I look at Uranus?" Turns out she thought I was an idiot for not knowing it wasn't visible at that particular time.
