Of course, the Iranians captured 52 Americans in 1979 and held them for 444 days and released them the day after Reagan was sworn into office.
Americans assumed that the shootdown of the airliner was justification for the hostage crisis. Even our President said it was ok --- the first President Bush said, "I will never apologize for the United States of America. I don't care what the facts are."
We won't ever forget 9/11 and the Iranians probably haven't forgotten this act of terrorism by the US.
