Somali pirates attempt attack on Dutch warship

NAIROBI, Kenya – These Somali pirates picked the wrong ship to hijack.

Troops aboard the Dutch warship HNLMS Tromp fired warning shots Wednesday off the coast of East Africa as suspected Somali pirates in two small skiffs raced toward their warship, the EU Naval Force said.

After the pirates realized they had made what spokesman Cmdr. John Harbour called a "rather silly mistake," they turned around and fled. EU Naval Force personnel tracked down the two skiffs and a third suspected mothership, finding ammunition and rocket-propelled grenades on board, said Harbour, a spokesman for the EU Naval Force.

The two skiffs were destroyed and the pirates were set free on the mothership after it had been cleared of weapons.

Do I hear a nomination for the Darwin Awards? :D

I agree and they shouldn't have let them go considering that they are pirates.

also I've read about it on the net, that people can go on a pirate adventure criuse ship that takes you down "pirate alley" and they have all sorts of weapons you can rent out including RPGs and mini-guns. they say you won't get in any trouble for killing a pirate.

Wow!

Sadly, Germany has totally different stance on piratery...

Here's an article about it from a german paper:

http://www.welt.de/politik/article3325218/Wohin-mit-den-gefangenen-somalischen-Piraten.html

The title says it all: 'Where to with the caught somalian pirates'

There was a case when a german warship caught 9 pirates. They actually got taken to Hamburg for being tried in court there.

The german government is trying to get a third country in Africa to do that for us.

As they are seen as civil people rather than military fighters, they can't be just shor down, as we have no death sentence. And if they are no real threat to a warship, soldiers cannot just open fire on pirate ships.

Germany spends 31.000 Euro per foreign prisoner per year, a total of 431.000.000 Euro in 2006. Mind you, for prisoners who do not have a german passport and in my opinion have no reason to be in the country after not accepting our laws in most cases.

Man we need to change some things soon.

ok, that makes no sense whatsoever :rofl2:

i do speak a wee bit dutch and the title says: Where to go with the captured Somali pirates? :hatsoff:

piracey has come along way, from the oceans to the PC. Capt. Blackbeard would be proud.

Well, that's the Dutch for you!
Bloody Dutch!

Careful how you speak about the Dutch. I hear they're quite vengeful creatures. Who do you think came up with the "Dutch Oven"? :D

I hear that the reason we don't just shoot pirates on sight, and often just let them go unless caught red-handed with hostages, is that the pirate groups are seen as a counter to some of the terrorist groups that have been popping up in Somalia. Terrorists and pirates don't like each other much apparently. Which makes sense I guess, since the pirates are only concerned with profits, and if they were to work with Al Qaeda they figure they'd never see another ransom payment.

They should have blasted the mothership to kingdom come with the damn pirates still on it! Would have been no great loss to the world.
