Nirvana released two masterpieces (and some argue three - including In Utero). Smashing Pumpikins released Melancollie and Infinite Sadness and Siamese dreams and some other kinda lame releases. I'd say just for Nevermind and Unplugged Nirvana takes it, and In Utero was pretty raw too. I never heard Zeitgeist but I know it got some decent reviews.

While Nirvana kick-started the genre. They can't match up to Billy Corgan's amazing lyrics. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was a beautiful, beautiful album

How ironic that this came up. I heard Zeitgeist for the first time this week. I think its pretty good!

With that being said, while the Pumpkins are one of "my bands" there are only a few bands I like listening to more than Nirvana, and the Pumpkins aint one of em.

I gotta go with the Pumpkins. Kurt was prolific and all that wonderful stuff but he never got beyond soft verse/loud chorus. The Pumpkins not only produced more music than Nirvana, but also had a wider range in musical styles. Gish vs. Nevermind? I go with Gish for Jimmy's drumming alone.

Nirvana is King.

Neither.. I know I am starting fight, but both are very medicore.. Jane's Addiction is a far better band, someone mentioned them.

I've always thought that Nirvana was the most over hyped band of the last 20 years. In reality they were an average band with a lead singer who wrote some dark songs which appealed to teens. So now we are stuck having to hear that Kurt was a musical genius when he was actually just another depressed musician that got lucky to be apart of the current "it" scene.

the hard stuff rocks, the soft stuff is just beautiful

There is nothing in Nirvana's catalog that can match the sheer force and power of these eight from the Pumpkins

1 I Am One
2 Siva
3 Bury Me
4 Geek U.S.A
5 Silverfuck
6 Frail and Bedazzled
7 Drown
8 Starla

I got to say Nirvana. I was only young when they came out and took for granted their music at the time. Its only in the years since with so many average bands making music that I realize how good they actually were.
Love the pumpkins, siamese dream is a masterpiece but gotta go with Nirvana.

PS - A rep for E-Ann Hilden for mentioning Jane's Addiction who are certainly in the same league as pumpkins and nirvana.
