I'll bet you $2 dollars that delivery guys like coming to our house more. My roommates and I always tip them with a bottle of whatever beer is currently residing in our fridge. :)

I hope they don't drink it on the way driving back to the pizza place! That could be a very costly tip if they're caught!

I used to do that kind of work and my guests alway tip me, and left with a smile! I can not give a tip to someone that does not do their job, and that is to make the guests happy and feel right at home as if they were your own guest in your home. If you're upset about something leave it at the door before you start severing your guests and treat them with respect they deserve!

Most of the restraints they share tips now so even if you don't tip like I do for bad service, they still get a cut and I think that's one reason they give us such poor service!

I think the wage system in the U.S. is out of whack. The idea that the wait staff/servers don't make minimum wage and rely on tips to make wage is ridiculous. It might've had value back in the 1950s when the dollar had "some balls" in the economic landscape. But, today, it's bullshit.

Having said that--I fall in line with other people. I start the night at 20% and go up or down depending on factors. If the service was bad, but I thought the waiter/waitress tried hard..I'll tip 12-15% I can count the number of times in my life where I've left no tip and this is only because of complete rudeness.

I do "reward" a little "TnA" if my waitress happens to show a little. Obviously I'm not a pig about it, but let's just say TnA helps with the "ambiance"...

I also will, sometimes, write out a little joke or a complement on the restaurant's copy of the receipt, if I pay with a credit card, so that people will see that Waitress X is really cool!

I'll bet you $2000 they prefer going to Beck's.
A free bottle of beer pales in comparison to a close encounter with "The Rack"

I give the bartender a 20 just to keep the ice cold.
Not really.

In Colombia people tip very little or rarely at all.
Many places here have the tip included in the bill, usually 10% which I hate because
the waiter/waitress has no inscentive to do anything but take your order and bring the food.
Its like a socialist tipping system.

Should you or do you tip even for shoddy service? No.
But if the waiter/waitress is overwhelmed with customers it may not be thier fault.

And that's . . what . . a couple of partially consumed "Shafers" . . Milwaukees Best etc., one with an unknown, 1/2 smoked cigarette floating in it ?

I'm kidding ! :D

I tip very well when someone gives me excellent service. A server who is on top of things is rewarded 20-25% of the bill. OTOH, If I get substandard or bad service, I won't tip at all. Nobody is going to twist my arm and make me leave a tip for terrible service. F' that!

i delivered pizzas for a loooong while, and it all depends on what she considers a good tip. drivers struggle for 10%, i won't go into why they deserve better tips than others in the service industry just yet.

anyways, i don't leave a tip based on percentage because, say i go to a steakhouse and my bill is aound $50, and the service was good. at 20%, why do they deserve $10, when i could be at somewhere like tgifridays with a bill of $15 and have stellar service, but 20% is still only $3. in both cases i would tip $5. chances are the steakhouse doesn't have free refills, so the waitstaff has done nothing to deserve a tip anyway. if service is bad, i don't like leaving a tip. i understand that when the place is packed, my food will take longer to arrive and so on, thats out of the waitstaff's hands, but many things aren't, such as getting my order right, or remembering to bring it to me while i stare at it on the counter for 10 minutes as they shoot the breeze with somebody else. thats shit service. all that can be made up for with an apolology and a free drink or appetizer, something to tell me they acknowlege the fact that they aren't doing their job well.

now lets talk about the delivery driver. they kill their car, pay outrageous amounts in gas (that they aren't fully reimbursed for, by the way, in many cases the delivery charge you pay doesn't fully go to the driver) risk their life in crazy traffic, brave all types of weather, slip on your icey fucking doorstep, all to get some food to somebody too lazy to pick it up. and while the bill may be $45, most people think $3 is being generous. some people think $1 is sufficient.

so a waiter/bartender, who just walks from the kitchen to your table and bothers you while you eat deserves a great deal more than the driver, who does so much more. where's the logic in that?

and on a seperate note, i do believe that the manditory gratuity of 16% included on the check in larger groups at restaurants is okay, often times the waitstaff gets stiffed in those situations, and thats when they do work. my observations above were for smaller groups, 1-3 people.

but tipping should not be abolished, its done to show appreciation for a job well done, or for helping when you really shouldn't have to. if the bag-boy at the store loads your car, throw him a few bucks. a lot of people in service jobs that don't normally recieve tips go above and beyond, and that deserves some thanks. what better way than with cash. money talks.

ill stop now, i could go on forever.

I believe Becks usually tips the driver about 5 dollars. And that's for one pizza. I think that's a fair tip.

Simple equation for me......every server automatically starts off at 20%.......based on their service throughout the dining, it can go up or down from there.

I am not sure where I fall under to vote, but this works for me! I have served and bartended before, so understanding how bad it can be at times, I have a tendancy to overtip. . . look, an extra few bucks isn't going to make or break me, and if it makes someone's day, then why not.

I have had OK service, but can't say that I have ever been poorly waited on. . . lucky, I guess.

In the US, unlike many other countries, tipping is seen as a social obligation.
The way you tip says a lot about you. It's alway better to be a generous tipper than to be a cheap bastard.

As far as how much you should tip goes, you should pretty much go by these guidelines:
Shitty service - at least 10% tip
Average service - at least 15% tip
Good service - at least 20% tip

Ok Mr. Pink. . . just throw in your damn buck! :1orglaugh

In belgium we don't give tips. But i will always give something when i like the food at a restaurant, f.i. if it is 72 euro, i'll raise it to 80. But if the service was crappy or the food was bad, they have nothing and I'm not even going over there anymore.

the whole institution is rather weird. why do you tip for some places and not for others? you don't tip at mcdonalds, but they cook your food and bring it out to you.

I try to tip generously whenever I can afford it. and some places that I like (where tipping is optional) I will always tip, other places it's a good idea to tip because it really does determine the quality of your food. yea, think about that one. here's a dollar, don't spit in my burrito.

I worked as a pizza driver, one time a company ordered 80 dollars worth of pizzas and gave me a two dollar tip, I was pissed.

A friend of mine knew this one kid who was a delivery driver years ago and he told me that when he didn't get tipped and went back to the same address, he would urinate on the pizza. True story; a real sleaze ball...I've heard too many instances. One of my closest friends won't even get his burgers with anything on them.

I pretty much tip whenver I go out. I will say this, however: Olive Garden the last two times was atrocious service. The one time I had "a few" and I was with my woman, and for whatever reason, that little bitch waiter left the tray sitting next to us damn near the whole time. I was so steaming mad...:cussing: Still tipped the little bitch though. It's not really in me not to. :dunno: I remember the whole time, telling my girl, this dude better not mess with our food...

The last time, I was with my fam and this waiter dude kept stairing at me while to-and-from the kitchen the whole time. I think he was checking me out. It kind of turned my stomach. I don't like people that stair. :nono:

Nevertheless, he is lucky I was with my family that time, because he would have went, all 230 pounds of his fat ass, right into a table on the way out. I would have checked his ass right into a table full of manicotti and free salad. :thefinger Tell me that wouldn't've been sweet.

Naw, we never did anything like that. but we did make a note of whenever a gorgeous woman took out an order, and then would challenge each other to decide who it was that would get to take the delivery whenever anyone on the hot list came up. :D

I don't go to places where they make my food for me, and if for some reason I have to I will tip them good except for horrible service. I always fear what they are putting into my food. :1orglaugh
