I'll bet you $2 dollars that delivery guys like coming to our house more. My roommates and I always tip them with a bottle of whatever beer is currently residing in our fridge.
i delivered pizzas for a loooong while, and it all depends on what she considers a good tip. drivers struggle for 10%, i won't go into why they deserve better tips than others in the service industry just yet.
anyways, i don't leave a tip based on percentage because, say i go to a steakhouse and my bill is aound $50, and the service was good. at 20%, why do they deserve $10, when i could be at somewhere like tgifridays with a bill of $15 and have stellar service, but 20% is still only $3. in both cases i would tip $5. chances are the steakhouse doesn't have free refills, so the waitstaff has done nothing to deserve a tip anyway. if service is bad, i don't like leaving a tip. i understand that when the place is packed, my food will take longer to arrive and so on, thats out of the waitstaff's hands, but many things aren't, such as getting my order right, or remembering to bring it to me while i stare at it on the counter for 10 minutes as they shoot the breeze with somebody else. thats shit service. all that can be made up for with an apolology and a free drink or appetizer, something to tell me they acknowlege the fact that they aren't doing their job well.
now lets talk about the delivery driver. they kill their car, pay outrageous amounts in gas (that they aren't fully reimbursed for, by the way, in many cases the delivery charge you pay doesn't fully go to the driver) risk their life in crazy traffic, brave all types of weather, slip on your icey fucking doorstep, all to get some food to somebody too lazy to pick it up. and while the bill may be $45, most people think $3 is being generous. some people think $1 is sufficient.
so a waiter/bartender, who just walks from the kitchen to your table and bothers you while you eat deserves a great deal more than the driver, who does so much more. where's the logic in that?
and on a seperate note, i do believe that the manditory gratuity of 16% included on the check in larger groups at restaurants is okay, often times the waitstaff gets stiffed in those situations, and thats when they do work. my observations above were for smaller groups, 1-3 people.
but tipping should not be abolished, its done to show appreciation for a job well done, or for helping when you really shouldn't have to. if the bag-boy at the store loads your car, throw him a few bucks. a lot of people in service jobs that don't normally recieve tips go above and beyond, and that deserves some thanks. what better way than with cash. money talks.
ill stop now, i could go on forever.
