It's a stereotype. Plain and simple.
Racists come in all manner or colors and principles.
Al Sharpton who argues for preferential treatment for blacks is as much a racist as Don Black who argues for preferential treatment for whites. Stereotyping racists only perpetuates the problem and does nothing to end racial disharmony.

Because a vast percentage of humans display certain traits, looks, attitudes, appearances, behaviors, clothing etc. within a specific group - does not mean that, statistically, ALL of the 'individuals' of that particular group do. However, from personal experience; when one finds oneself finding the same traits within a specific group a majority of times - it cannot be dismissed as politically incorrect 'stereotyping.'
There are stereotypes about blue collar, southern white people. There are stereotypes about urban, ghettoized black Africans. All phenomenons hold much more than a modicum of REALITY - whether we choose to find it politically acceptable or not.
If you read my posting here, in this topic, you will find that I agree with you and am not harboring some biased-ness of sorts:
No, I am very much blue-collar now, living on my own. I am not a 'classicist,' nor was I maligning all blue-collar, white-people. The blue-collar whites are simply a lot more upfront, and uncompromising on the racism while the upper classes - it's a behind closed doors, white flight, sort of thing. Not in all cases, I am sure posters such as **********, and torre82min can testify to that fact; living in a lot of different areas with rich white people - where the n word is a feature of everyday life. But blah, this is all a matter of personal experience, and not even worth debating. But I am glad it is cleared up.
Don Black certainly fits the 'stereotype,' to an extent. If you've ever browsed their 'post your photo' topics on that website, a bulk again, are the physical 'stereotype.'
Al Sharpton is pretty much a walking stereotype, and I think a comical testament of 'the best' that has come forth to be the voice of black America - especially considering the hostility and disregard that they already receive from white civilians. Stormfront people and black militant people have a lot in common, in actuality.
I don't really consider Al Sharpton, a 'leader' - especially for the arcane task that is and was ahead of black Americans. Emotionalism, and pointing a finger at all white people to have 'guilt' for past wrongdoings committed against blacks - while in white nations, is not leadership. It's emotionalism and guilt-tripping. I look more along the lines of any separatists such as Garvey, or Dubois that are looking to establish a fresh sense of self, and sense of existence within African blacks as the Africans that they are. Integration amongst racialist (closeted or not) white people has done blacks much pathological harm, that many cannot see. It's painful to see fish out of water, only for their captors to then hate them for their maladjusted-ness.
