Never place your index finger inside the trigger guard until you have precisely that of which you you intend to destroy clearly visible in your sights. * The sights are those "post - like" extensions off of the top of the firearm. * The top of the firearm is the area of the mechanism that would generally be facing . . . well . . upward, to be so blunt :tongue: ie - toward the sky, sun and or moon. 
Additionally - never take up aim, load or chamber a round of ammunition unless you're 110 % damn certain that it's clear well beyond your target ! An empty water bottle at two feet makes for a horrible bullet trap / backstop !

It's really not much different than the time you were a kiddo and you were messin with your ***'s electric staple *** . . . and you fired a staple into your hand. You remember what not to do ! lol !
