Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban has just announced a proposed ban on “gender studies” at Universitys operating in Hungary.
Giving universities just 24 hours in which to give feedback on the proposal before the amendment inevitably goes ahead.
There are 3 arguments to support this decision in play here
On the surface the Government claims that the courses are a waste of resources and do not prepare graduates for the jobs market in Hungary but do divert resources away from other more useful degrees that will make Hungarian students more productive and employable, something which helps everyone. In other words, both teachers and students as well as classroom space could be engaged in other activities to actually increase the prosperity of the country.
The Government has labelled gender studies courses as “economically irrelevant”. Indeed they are, but more on that in a moment.
Although this simple point is difficult to argue with the real reasons behind this decision are far more strategic . Christian Democrats within the government have been lobbying hard to eliminate gender studies programs for some time because these programs are clearly pushing an ideology and not science or fact. Indeed the feminist ideology has aggressively combined with other special interest groups to attack and undermine Christianity in the west, so it’s hardly surprising that the
Christian Democrats would seek to stop the same pattern from emerging in Hungary.
Nevertheless their point holds true in that this is an ideology not a science so has no legitimacy in a place of higher education. Just like a sensible government wouldn’t allow tax funded church of scientology degrees in universities either.
However, I feel the deepest reason for this policy development is that these courses are not only ideologically driven but have shown to be culturally destabilising and potential culturally destroying in the west.
“gender studies” was in one time possibly somewhat relevant in the west, but of course is now just code for “alleging how bad men are and how badly women are treated.” This is all presented to students without any empirical evidence and without any critical thinking involved whatsoever. Indeed critical thinking is aggressively shut down in such courses that are delivered in the west. Again, perhaps this ideology had some relevance 50 years ago, however, now in the west, as women are arguably similarly well off or even better off than men it is still being used as a weapon against men. This is emasculating men and creating a deep division between the genders, illustrated by plummeting birth rates, low marriage rates, high divorce rates and skyrocketing depression and mental health rates especially in women, all hallmarks of a society that is about to fail. Indeed as gender studies and the wests bastardised version of feminism becomes less and less relevant it has had to pick up other so called oppressed groups whom combined in a rag bag of inconsistent ideologies to aggressively lead to the erosion and hatred of the local western cultures.
Aside from the people in the western left wing echo chamber which leaves the rest of the world who see what an initially well-meaning feminism has turned into in the west and are desperate to avoid the same path to irrational cultural self-destruction.
I mentioned earlier that as feminism has become less and less relevant in the west, we have an issue that more and more people have been trained in this ideology. This had led to an explosion of post graduate courses because those with undergraduate gender studies degrees are largely unemployable so go back to do more study. Then of course the only place that people with post grad degrees in gender studies can work is a university. University Funding has increased in these departments because these people simply can’t get anything outside of the university system. Also social pressure from feminist lobby groups have increased the budgets of these departments, which reinforces the increases in graduate numbers in what has become a less and less relevant degree.
