While I am not anti-gays or anything, I don't see the benefit of having gays openly admitting their sexual orientation in the military. I won't go to the extreme of saying straight soldiers will be raped by gay soldiers. But there will certainly need to be many changes done within the military. For example, take male/female latrines and barracks, they are always strictly seperated for obvious reasons. And like it or not, many soldiers will not like the idea of sharing bunks or toilets with openly gay soldiers.

My question is what is wrong with DADT? Why the need to be gay and proud about it in the military? Is it such a huge sacrifice to lie about your sexual preference on a piece of paper so that you are accepted into service?

Either way, even if they just casually said "yeah, I'm gay," what would be so terrible about that? I'm pretty sure they're in the military for a reason, they wouldn't risk their lives simply because they want to be around a bunch of guys. That's just foolish.

I don't mean to play into stereotypes (Actually, yes I do) but if a straight soldier is overpowered by a gay soldier, he deserves to get raped. :tongue:

OK, in the part I colored, change the word "gay" to "black" and go back 70 years. Bigotry is bigotry.

The part in italics rubs me the wrong way (respectfully) for 2 reasons. #1. Don't lie to the military. Don't lie in the military. You're supposed to have honor, use it. #2. Fuck lying to the military. If you're an American citizen, you should have the option of serving your country, period. Discrimination is discrimination, whether it's against color, religion or sexual preference.

There have been decorated members of the military...some of them fluid in Arabic and quite crucial to the "war on terror" who have been dismissed because their sexuality was discovered. They're not running around shouting, "We're here, we're queer and now give me my M4."

If the military can function just as it does now, then why keep DADT around?

The questions remain though; will it create a breeding ground for violence? Will it create clear discrimination and an imbalance of treatment between gay and hetero troops? And will allowing gays to serve openly drive down recruitment numbers? I believe the answer to all three questions is, "no". But I understand why the military remains apprehensive.

The military is not an equal opportunity employer. Too short, too tall, too fat or too old or too many tattoos and you can't enlist. There's a huge list of barring criteria. But that's no reason not to see how it works to include one more group. Members of our military have to take an oath to serve...why would we encourage them to be liars?

Actually, for anyone with the correct half of a brain, unlike most of the responders in this thread, the real problem is known gays being in a combat situation in front of an antiGay armed person/persons who is/are engaged in an aggressive combat attitude... or, for those slow readers on here...declared Gays are in much more danger of getting shot or left exposed to enemy fire than someone who just keeps it to themselves.
But that's just a bit of reality that definitely isn't Leftie PC...so move along and worry about the Gay military person's feelings, and such.
That'll work much better...from the extreme Right Wing Religious to the Extreme UberLeft PC Police...it's all a crock and an intellectual exercise at best, since those worrying about it the most will never see a minute of real combat; at least not 'til the Jihadis come to your hometown!

Anyway, as Bill Hicks said; "Anyone DUMB enough, to want to be in the army, should be allowed to be in the army."

But seriously, if a gay man or woman has the ability, stamina, drive and compulsion to serve their country why should they be forced to hide their sexuality? In fact, why is sexuality even a factor?
