Restaurants Without a "A" Grade

I went to eat tonight at a restaurant I hadnt been to in awhile. While I'm waiting in line, I happened to see their health code score on the window which was a letter "B" grade. Now its not the first time Ive been to a place with a "B" grade, but here is my question. Why is there even a grading system?

Why cant the health code department just make it to if you do not have a "A" grade then you cannot be open? And what qualifies for a lower grade, do you get a "B" if there is only 1 rat inside the kitchen that wont die? Do you get a "C" if a cook refuses to wash both hands?

:dunno:

I didn't even know restaurants got a grade that was out in the open. I don't go to a lot of them, but I have never seen one. It must just be where other people live. :dunno:

Which fine dining establishment are you referring to? I would very much like to know so I can avoid it. :hatsoff:

I think that's a Los Angeles County thing only. I've never seen the signs anywhere else in Cal, and I've never seen anything but a "A" in LA restaurants.

But srzly, I've never seen restaurants with other than an A or asian restaurants that don't have a grade here in Australia.

It was a Mexican chain place called "Qdoba". Its a knock off of Chipotle. And yes, this was in Los Angeles.

OH dear gawd, Qdoba. They're fucking awful and bland WITHOUT the whole worry of germs or droppings/insects in the food!

If there's a Moe's Southwest Grill or anything else, please PLEASE go there. As far as cleanliness.. I could give a shit less whether this person did this, that person didnt wash that.. I've been in enough kitchens in my employable years to know.. things are never.. EVER done 'well enough' for health code. That's pretty much why I dont eat at o'Charlies, Olive Garden, McDonalds or KFC more than once per every two years.. if that.

Whew, if the health guys saw half the shit I did... I'd be out of a job, but some random guest or two would also be saved from throwing up his infectious steak. :p

i would rather not know what goes on...ignorance is truly a bliss when it comes to this.

However, I have seen the grading system outside of L.A. county. Mainly in Oxnard, S.D., O.C., San Bernadino and Riverside. I'm sure they exist in other parts of Cali too but these are the counties that I visit most often.

Also, if a spot is really good, then I can overlook a poor rating, i.e. El Sauz in Glendale. OMG is it good, especially late at night.

Man, I hear this all the time, but the 2 near me are both grade A, and the food is great. Of course, those are the only ones owned by the couple that run them, so it could just be their thing.

BTW, we have the grading system in IN and KY.

As far as I know, Los Angeles County is the only place in California that grades their resturant's sanitation with a letter grade. I also know that the Carolina's do the same thing, but I don't know if they use the letter grades to represent the same level of sanitation.

There's some places around here that have been on the news before about not being up to standard, and the health department either shuts them down or gives them time to get things straight.

The grading system in restaurants is similar to the star rating of a hotel. 3star, 4star and 5star being the best.

If you go to a 3star hotel, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it, it's just not the same high standard as a 5.

A class B restaurant will have no food safety issues, like "rats" as you said. Maybe it just means the service is not as great as an A.

Restaurants with health and safety issues get closed down. So don't worry. Be thankful it's a B, thats a very good rating.
