Debra Follingstad of San Francisco's Bernal Height's neighborhood is suddenly scheduled for a rent increase from her current rent of $2,145 per month to $8,900 a month.

Tenant advocates say they can't remember a rent increase this high.

Follingstad has been so depressed she began packing her belongings this weekend in preparation of moving out.

The 400 percent rent hike is scheduled to take place on May 5.

"There are no chances of coming up with that money. I can't even wrap my head around it," Follingstad said.

On top of that, her security deposit is scheduled to increase to $12,500.

I know people in San Francisco...that's actually where a lot of offices of people FreeOnes work with are located. I know that the rent is crazy high, but this has got to be the most insane rent increase I've seen.

I'm sure there's some dutch land lords that would LOVE to do this in Amsterdam (where rent is already pretty crazy for a shoebox size apartment).

How are they justifying the security deposit increase? Here you pay that at first and that's it until you move out. Then you receive it back minus the repair costs. It sounds like someone is trying to remove the tenants and convert to condominiums.

They raised it this high to force her out, and they eliminated the inlaw housing to make it single family to get around having to pay her moving costs.

in that case legally going she can go to court to ask to be paid as a damage for not respecting the contract because the contract stands for a period and depends if there is agreed or not to change the rent price for the rent period.

Conspiracy...
Move away from California.

We will get it back in the new Civil War. ;)

If it comes to that.

With prices like that people could be well educated professionals with great paying jobs and still be homeless in that city.

Yup. I know one person who works for http://store.freeones.com/ , which is located in SanFran. Apparently their rent became unsustainable and they are in the process of moving to a much cheaper city.

Funny thing is I remember in the 90s all the yuppies were moving from Cali up to WA state to get out. Not really related...but I lived in the south east side of the state which is desert. It doesn't matter how much you clean, you will drag dirt in since the wind always blows and dust storms are the norm. So these people move over and build half a mill to million dollar homes, in the middle of the desert without an established neighborhood, with tons of BIG floor to ceiling windows. I remember going to some open houses and these people had installed white, or very light flooring, had white couches, etc. Hope those poor bastards didn't have extreme cases of OCD.

I am a lawyer, and usually contracts overall the world have same meaning and purpose.

Not all states have rent control. And even in those that do, from city to city, what falls under rent control varies. So a rental contract that's perfectly legal in my state would be invalid in most parts of California. California is probably the most tenant-friendly state in the U.S. And San Francisco is probably second only to (The People's Republic of) Santa Monica in terms of tenants' rights in California. I feel bad for this woman. But this is what happens when you have too many people who work for vaporware companies, that make no money and produce no products, but have $10 billion valuations, living in your city.

When (not if) the bubble pops, she'll probably be able to get that apartment back for half what she was paying before.
