Rap stars, who can you stand or not

So what do other music genres contribute to society? Is that really what music is about? Plus, don't you think some of the things mentioned in rap songs are just a portrait of the plain, harsh society at least some of the performers grew up in? I agree on disliking most of what rap music lyrics are about, though but wouldn't blame the music for negative developments in society.

Another thing: Why is it always that people hate music being "commercial" (whatever that actually may mean). It's a business after all. Wouldn't you want your fav band to sell their music? Or, put another way: If you were an excellent painter and had tried selling your stuff for years yet gone unnoticed and then one day, you'll discover you just have to mix in some extra color to sell hundreds of paintings, wouldn't you do it? Why is it that being "commercial" is so despicable for musicians?

To me "commercial" hip-hop are the dime-a-dozen phoney "thugs" - for some of these artists, the nearest they've seen of "da hood" is from their limo as they drive past. I know it sounds silly, but when I listen to "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five now, I wonder where are the future hip-hop stars who can educate? I suppose they're out there, but their message appears to be drowned out by the "thugs" who wants to promote mistreating one's girlfriend, shout "ni88a" and shoot anyone who gives them lip. These days I just go to record fairs instead.
For commercial pop music - all I can say is that I now groan when another "pop idol" butcher a classic with their woeful cover version.

Oh, I'm so with you on that one. And isn't it funny how kids think this or that song is brand new while it's just a remake of a 25 year old song with some computer added effects?

So many people have summed up my opinion perfectly and there are many good points here. As with darkwarrior and monkey king were saying, rap was at it's peak (IMHO) back in the early 90's. But I have to disagree about the "new" hate/racism thing. Rap, 15 years ago, was sometimes racially motivated. And if it wasn't race, it was hatred against the police or mafia or someone. That's what made it so powerful. And it wasn't trivial hate like these days, it was based on the struggle against racial discrimination in society and especially with the police (many songs mentioned Rodney King) and many open-minded people were able to take their side. It had a good reason, and had power and emotion to back it. Rap was never about love songs. It's lost itself in its own success. Why would I support an artist who talks about how much he money and women he has in his life? How is that a worthy cause for exposure? And as has been previously mentioned by Om3ga, it's not even beneficial.
:2 cents:

I listen to everything. I don't like mainstream artists, conscious, gangster, or otherwise. Rap is like wrestling and the streets mixed now. I despise 50 Cent. I wish he'd fucking die. Rakim is my #1 all time favorite. I can talk /type rap all night, so I'll stop here.

50 cent and g unit are all shit. kanye west, the game, sheek louch are all good current rapper

but why is it that the deads one are always the best tupac, biggie smalls, big punisher and big l were all the best of the best

another thing that suprises me is that tupac is dead and hes still got lyrics that affect today, that boy was deep

50 is ok, not the best. kayne looks like he might be the man now that Jay-Z has stepped aside. However, if Jay was still making albums there would be none better than him. The Game might be ok but he has too many other rappers on his album with him. not alot of solo work.

interesting comments by all...from those who seem to know about rap & hip-hop, those who don't know as much as they think they do, and those who've never really listened to it but feel they know all about it.

by no means am i an aficionado, but i was actually alive when hip-hop first came on the scene and have listened (and not always liked) as it matured and then evolved.

first, let me answer the question posed by the poster of the thread. 50 annoys me to no end...an album and a half in and he suddenly thinks he's the man? don't think so... always have been a fan of dre and snoop. u have to respect LL because he's one of the few from the "golden age" of hip hop (mid-80's when hip-hop broke out) who can still put it down 20 years later.

now...i feel the need to ask why people still talk about "gangsta rap", when it pretty much died along with biggie and 2pac? while many rappers still bring the street to the studio, that has always been a part of hip-hop, and i don't think that will ever change, but most of the rappers today only devote a cut or two off a cd to reminiscing about the danger of the streets.

second...if there were no such thing as "bling" cuts (songs devoted to bragadoccio), hip-hop never would have made it out of new york...what is hip-hop without, "i'm bigger, better, badder, have more women, money and cars"? again, that goes back to the roots of the genre, if there's no place for that then there's no place for hip hop in your cd collection.

third...hip-hop, like most other genres of music has many styles. to lump rap together is like saying all rock is the same or all country is the same. if rap sucks and metal rules, what about the hip-hop/metal artists? or have u taken the time to listen?

lastly, i saw some good comments in response to the question of what rap/hip-hop has added to society. i often wondered myself, what middle-class suburban kids who whined about how misuderstood they were and how out of place they felt added to the music scene in the 90's, but then i didn't ask nirvana to justify their art.

i don't like most hip-hop, i'm not a fan of most of the stuff that comes out of the south, but i've come to like some, and i'm a jazz fan who, along with fans of classical music, are considered to be among the most elitist music listeners of all. i bet if some of u who claim to hate rap actually listened to it, you might find an appreciation for it, as i did.

I think rap music is very good and I admit I enjoy listerning to it...I think the whole scene is very cool and is very "fantasy" compared to other music genres.

The only thing I don't like what rap has done, is making 12 year old lads think they can strut around the sreets with thier hoods up and talk all this "yo gangst$ how's it chillin ma bro" and feel need to get out thier BB(pellet) guns and point them in ya face asking why u diss a bro...to me that is just plain SAD!!! bits of young kids thinkin they rule the streets with thier other gangst$ sorry "homies"

kids calm down...its all in your head...HOMIE$

Can't stand any of them.

What happened to the musicians? People who new what key the song is in!!
Men and women who spent hard time in a room or classes learning musical theory. Knowing the relative minor of a major etc.......

That is why rap sucks!!!

a lot of rap albums today have very little solo work for instance look at kanye's new album late registraion almost all songs are done wiht other artist.

First--if people don't like rap then why come to a rap thread and start bashing?
I'm sure others could voice their negative opinions about your choice in music, movies, etc. just for the fun of it.

Okay, I like MC Ren. His older stuff before he went heavy into the Nation of Islam. he's not that deep as he was and his music is much better for it.

I'm huge on Eazy-E. 10 years+ that he passed.

I like ICP (Insane Clown Posse)

Luniz. Their album "Operation Stackola" from 1995 is probably one of the best albums.

If anyone likes Proof from D12 then check out his new album "Searching for Jerry Garcia". It's got great beats and he's a talented writer/rapper.

I like Outkast, Too Short, Geto Boys--more Bushwick Bill.
Xzibit is nice.
D.O.C.--Funky enough!
50's new album isn't great but "A Baltimore love thing" is a great song.

I hope this wasn't to pick one....because I like to listen to alot of different guys.

why bother to post your opinion in a rap thread when all you hav to say is bad.

people are jus wastin there time and rap fans time when they post threads sayin how much they hate sumthin.

you people need to understand that the music industry doen't revolve around your big head and there are a range of different genres of music.

None of them are real they all have these personas that could rival professional wrestlers. Sure they are good with words well at least some are but a 5 year old can rhyme. Howabout letting 50 cent bust a guitar solo while rapping, or any other rapper play a real insturment and rap at the same time.

Hey i understand what you're saying but the truth is theres a reason why rappers are who they are they didnt get their because they have been shot or have shto people they are there because they are artist and and gone to hardships like everyone else in this world despite weither or not its exaggarated. Its their talent and used in what way they want. Id like to see a 5 year old or and rock or what ever kind of musician, freestlye making a rap that rymes and makes some decent sense in a split second. Not many can and thats one of the reason why they are up there and if your gonna bash saying that they are fake they ahve no talent thats your opinon but they do have talent and its used in a different way just because its not what you liek doenst mean that it took no skill to make it or that they are fake or that their music is bad. so if your gonna bash saying rap takes no skill its horrible and that its all fake you dont need to say it. This thread is about who you like and who you dont like not if you like rap or what you think of rap. Rap/ hip hop is a unique form of music and thats what makes the music industry so great today, it is so broad that theres somthing for everyone. and yet i know that there are those songs that are obxnious and seem stupid but for some people thats what they wnat to talk about and its fine by me and if its not fine by you dont bash rap. Stick to the thread who you like and who you dont like not if you like rap or not. Oh yea and it does take skill. :2 cents:

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not in the crowd that thinks tupac is the greatest rapper ever. You guys really think that? I don't know, I don't. Anyone heard of K-Os? K-Os can actually play instruments (although he doesn't on all songs) and I think while he is not the most innovative rapper, he's probably my favorite for multiple minor reasons. Never uses four-letter profanities. Never calls a woman a bitch. And he sings a nice melody every once in awhile as well. He's basically what Wyclef Jean wishes he could sound like. Rap is not by any means my favorite genre at all, but there is a lot of good stuff out there--Saul Williams, Eyedea, Aesop Rock, The Roots just to name a few. But I do agree with the crowd that hates 50 cent, ludacris, and all those dummies. I pretty much just listen to the mars volta for 90% of the time, and everything else gets 10% of my attention.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Can't stand ANY of the...music???? Can't stand the garbage that records it. Sampling IS plagiarism, and scrating is nothing more then noise. Hearing some uncreative no talent hack butcher a great song like...Crazey Train, for example...makes my stomach turn and my ass pucker. I used to think it was God awful to hear some "elevator music" version of a Beatles song...until I heard some wanna be punk ass piece of shit rapper reduce great classic rock to a meaningless sound bite to make up for his or her lack of creativity and talent. The ONLY rapper I can come close to tolerating is Lil Kim,
and thats only because I think she's a hot little piece of ass with big fake tits...plus she looks like she would be a great cocksucker...the only reason for her to open her mouth!!! But what I REALLY want to know is this....how in the fuck can some pathetic fucking moron shot at this asshole fiftycent NINE FUCKING TIMES...and not get a head shot?!?!?! HOW???? All I need is one fucking round...just one!!! Did the dipshit that did this to him ever hear of a shooting range?? For christ sakes...go practice you dumb ass!!
