Do you have Windows Vista on your computer and if you do did you get a DVD writer that is compatible with it? Sometimes it has trouble reading things that were formatted or written from computers that didn't use it. I remember having trouble reading some disk that I created in using a computer with Windows XP.

Also make sure that you have an up to date driver with it. I don't know how old the DVD writer is, but there is a possibility that might matter.

Of course there is the possibility the DVD writer is just junk. I've bought some things in the past that were junk out of the box despite my best efforts.
