Quitting smoking

I am 50 and began to feel the negative effects of smoking. Started on Chantix and I am now in my 6th smoke free day, but Holy Fuck! do I miss it! It really has me miserable and I feel like I lost a best friend!
Have any of you quit, stayed quit, and are these feelings normal? I am convinced its NOT the Chantix, just my own reaction. I intend to stay quit. Any shared experiences would be helpful. Thanks.

Quitting is the best thing you could do...I believe its hard....but its worth it....you saving your health, my ****** was a smoker for 35 years and was diagnosed with throat cancer when he was in his early 50's....thankfully he overcame his illness with Radiation and many surgeries...and was very close to losing his voice box, due to the radiation he lost his saliva glands and cannot produce saliva...but hes alive and he quit smoking he day the was diagnosed with cancer....he wishes he had the will power to quit earlier like you are doing...dont wait until is too late...quit the earlier the better and say off of the cigarettes for good...Good luck to you and hope it works out the best for you...

Pretty normal, garrison. You're fighting both physical and psychological addiction, plus changing a habitual behavioral pattern. That's a lot to overcome, so naturally it's difficult. I quit 8 years ago and even now I still get a craving once in a while. Try to remember that you haven't lost a friend. Instead you're gaining control over an adversary that would, if permitted, destroy you.

I just wish that I could aquire some cyanide pills when or if. . . . (?) Doctors freak me out ! My late ****** was a Gen Prac. ****** Doc. A gem of a man who served hundreds of regular patients for absolute zero in return. (The needy couldn't afford it and he insisted to offer)
The Greatest Generation Doctor is retired or off to the heavens. They don't make em like they used to ! Personal Care used to be personal care.

If my vices (in moderation) take me, well then, not much to do about it.
I'll allow not, some greenhorn, pick a number cardiologist to hack my guts up.

garr. stay wide and clear of those who have years of cigarette cleanliness under their belt, they'll aggravate the hell out of you. BTW - What are your neg effects If I may ask ?

I always say - What the fuck do I have to live for ! No ********, lots of fucking bills, don't get me started on the encroachment of ruling elite ! Oh, I have 6 in their own world brothers and sisters and 'bout 5 reliable individuals that I call friends, much closer than ******.

All the best in your effort !:hatsoff:

That's good to hear garrisonjj I'm sure it will be rough for a while but you be better in the long run.

Ive been think of Quitting my self I just hope I can kick this bad habit.

I've been smoke free for little over 2 months now. Nicotene free for 2 weeks. I used the patch.

I make it through most days fine, but sometimes I really miss it. I've heard once you quit smoking you will have cravings periodically for the rest of your life! That sucks!

I quit for a year, and then went through a breakup, and smoked again. Now, almost a year later, I'm giving it another go. Today marks 4 weeks smoke free. I think a big part of it is mindset... instead of approaching it like "i'm quitting", you imply have to realize that instead, "i don't smoke."

Also, if you aren't truly ready to quit, you wont be able to. It's different for everybody, so only you will really know where you stand.

Good luck, I'm sure you can do it.

I think the patches are rather useless.. Since i've been free for 2 years now, never used patches, and i really don't miss smoking. Yes i got to admit i sometimes look back at times when i used to smoke, though i don't feel any temptations.. The only advice is just to tune yourself positively for everything BUT cigarettes.

Good luck, i hope you can quit :)

Crazy post! Tomorrow myself and 3 of my coworkers decided would be the day that we would quit smoking! I have quit once before only to go back to it. I already havent even taken my last drag and I'm freaking out but nows the time and I have to go at it again. Wish me luck! Be careful with the Chantix I have been reading lately that they are finding some negitive side effects from it. Although I would take it in a heartbeat except my insurance doesnt cover it and being a full time student I cant afford its cost of $200-$250 each month.

Here is a great thread if you feel like a read. Not a this threads been done thing just a good read on the subject. I stopped long ago, cold turkey. :) Never looked back. Good luck to you, I know you will succeed. :)

It's been about 2 years for me, and I still miss it, but you have to remember how hard you fought to get to this point, you can do it, if thats what you want, you'll succeed...good luck, and good work, you will be a much happier person sooner then you realize.

the wife is "trying", although I am not convinced the effort is all there. I went through a short period when I smoked while I drank, but never anything long term, so I can't say I understand the difficulties behind it. I enjoy a cigar once in a great while, but very rarely.

Good luck and hope you enjoy NOT smking soon!

Good for you! Quitting smoking is hard. If you need stress management, just take the money you were going to spend on cigarettes and buy yourself a paintball ***. Then, take your eliminate your cravings by battling people at a public paintball arena. :ak47:

I've been feeling lousy, and a cat scan revealed pulmonary nodules in my lungs. Doctor and specialist say they are benign, however they must follow them with periodically with cat scans for 2 years to confirm that they are stable.

Good Luck

I quit on May 21, 2007. I used the patch and it worked for me I was smoking 3 1/2 packs a day. I did it more for the money. I could not afford them any more.

Stopped over ten years ago and smoked for around 15 years before that day. I was smoking 35 a day when I just got up one morning and stopped dead. Never used a patch or anything else, just a bag of peanuts. They was there to break the habit of reaching for one. Instead of reaching for a smoke I ended up with a peanut instead.

As I've said many time before on here, there is only one thing that will make you stop and stay stopped, will power.
