Pub landlady Karen Murphy wins EU court fight to screen Premier League football via foreign satellite TV
A LANDLADY yesterday struck a blow for hard-up pubs by winning a legal fight to screen Premier League games cheaply via foreign satellite TV.
Karen Murphy, 47, had been fined £8,000 for using Greek-based Nova instead of the official licence holder Sky Sports.
But the European Court of Justice yesterday said the Premier League’s exclusive UK deal with Sky Sports was contrary to EU law and overturned her conviction.
The ruling, which needs to be rubber-stamped by the High Court, could see hundreds of pubs abandoning Sky Sports in favour of cheaper foreign providers.
Karen hailed her six-year court battle – which cost hundreds of thousands of pounds in legal fees – a “victory for football fans”.
