i guess there was a time when you needed the king's permision to fornicate and have kids.

This is not actually true. In fact any acronym becoming a word prior to the 1900's is almost certainly not the case as acronyms just weren't used. e.g. POHM (Prisoner of Her Majesty) or POSH (Port out starboard home).
