Playboy in the News

From the 1960s through the 1990s (with a peak happening sometime between the late 70s and early 90s), Playboy was a favorite point of conversation for mainstream news outlets. By the 80s boom of talk shows and tabloid television, it was hard to go a full week without a story from Playboy showing up somewhere on major network television or later on cable television.

So this thread is a place to shine the spotlight on those appearances that are now gone the wayside. Now, even showing the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover requires parental advisories and viewer discretion warnings with the famous pink censor strips being used that used to be reserved only for the most revealing photos.

In the past it was a different world and the stuff that programs and networks got away with showing is far and away more revealing than anything most networks would dare attempt today.

Case in point: the first clip I have to share.

The Playmate of the Year for 1991, Lisa Matthews made an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman." Now, right off the bat, a Playmate getting an appearance on a late night talk show today is rare at best (in fact, I can't remember the last time I saw it happen.)

However, beyond that, the lingerie clips and the focus on specific body parts in the video preview they showed is something that few if any talk shows would even consider using today. It also made for a great response from Letterman.

Entertainment Tonight doing profiles on Dian Parkinson for each of her Playboy appearances. I didn't even realize until watching these that Parkinson was still a model on The Price is Right while she made the Playboy pictorials.

Nancy Sinatra being interviewed on Geraldo about her Playboy appearance. You can tell attitudes about the magazine were much different back then. Notice the woman that didn't like her decision to pose, and was disappointed by it did so respectfully.

The two issues of Playboy that I actually remember are the one with Dian Parkinson (back in the days of Barker's Beauties, The Price Is Right was epic) and the one with Judy Norton Taylor (the girl who played Mary Ellen Walton).

I wonder if I still have those two issues packed away in a trunk somewhere?

When I was about 13, I was watching The Magic Hour, a show hosted by basketball player Magic Johnson, when I discovered the woman who pretty much shaped my sexual fantasies as a teenager.

Great post! I actually had Magic Johnson's show on my list of stuff to search for because I remember he was one that enjoyed having Playmates on as well. The 80s and 90s were a treasure trove of things like this. (McDougal is also one of my favorite Playmates of all time.)

Hugh Hefner appears on "The Late Show w/David Letterman" in April 1998. Hef teases a return to the Mansion's ways of old (which apparently never actually happened) and the Bill Clinton scandal, and what the gentleman's thoughts are on cosmetic surgery.

Sarah Jessica Parker promoting her interview in Playboy on "The Late Show" which seemed to be a disappointment to many guys, including David Letterman, that she wasn't actually posing in the magazine.

This one is a little unusual because it's not in the news, but still in the mainstream media. However, it's also not quite Playboy but it is. Anyway, last night was ********* ****** Feud featuring Dr. Phil's ****** against the Marshall ******. Dr. Phil's ********-in-law is Erica Dahm who was one of the Dahm Triplets that posed as Miss December 1998.

Interestingly enough, this is the second time Erica has appeared on ****** Feud. She appeared on an episode of the Richard Karn version with her sisters as well.
