Pet adoption

what the fuck you lookin at?
A local pet store is bringing in greyhounds for an adoption day tomorrow. She wants a greyhound because she thinks they are beautiful dogs...to me, not so much. I've always wanted a German Shepard. I also don't think we have a big enough yard for a greyhound. But she was reading about them and I guess that's ok if your willing to walk the dog 5 times a day! I'm not walking a dog 5 times a day, once fine, but not 5 and I'm sure as fuck not going running with him!

After we stop there we're going to stop by the local animal shelter and look at cats and dogs if we don't get a greyhound, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we don't but I'm open to checking them out. You all know the problem with animal shelters? Well for me at least. If you go to one with the slightest consideration of getting a dog or a cat, your bound to fall in love with something! I already know I'll see a poor little puppy and get all "AAAAWWWWWWWWWW" I love dogs! Especially at the shelter, gets me every time!

All that being said, what breed of dog generally gets along well with cats? We have 1 cat already, I've always wanted a dog. Now she's considering getting one finally! :nanner:

Of course we may get another cat, who knows?

He won't be happy with another cat either! A dog will really piss him off, but he'll just have to get used to it!

In my experience most animals adapt, while not happy at first, they become the best of friends down the road.

Cats are easier to care for <--the main reason I will never have another dog. I've had great dogs in the past, but too much of a pia. My 2 cents....

Siberian Husky's are extremely patient and gentle with cats and small kids, but love to run and run and run if you give them a beach or park. They are very obedient and people friendly. I have seen kittens all over various Husky faces digging little kitty claws in them, and the dog will take it until he gets up to leave. They are also very smart and people who own them know they speak some unknown language with inflection andand are very funny, silly dogs.

I've had dogs too, went to my parents house last summer to take their dog to be put down. Broke my heart as I basically grew up with him! They are a lot of work though, I already know that!

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
I used to have both a dog and a cat and they loved eachother...I mean, I would assume so. My dog used to lay on the floor and my cat would sleep by her stomach.

Our cat is old and set in his ways. He's also very high strung and scared of everything! I'm sure he'd warm up to another animal eventually!

If you get a dog as a puppy I don’t think there will be a problem. A puppy loves to play with everything including cats. I had a dog and cat that meet as youngster and now they are best friends. An old cat could be a problem at first.

That's what I was thinking. The cat could also establish his dominance early so the dog will know not to go to far while playing with the cat! Hell the cat got used to me being around! She had him for 6 years before I came around!

I miss my dogs, the ex-wife got them by default, she has the house i got an apartment. I had a small terrier and a black lab, i know they miss me though, they don't leave me alone when i go to get or drop off my kids. I got my lab from a non-kill shelter, sadly they didn't have any black labs at the kill shelter where i checked first.

I like Maltese - they're really sweet and mellow. I'd personally like a chihuahua, but if you're cat is already high-strung, a chihauhau would give it a heart attack.

I've owned many a cats and dogs through the years and I never seemed to have any problem with the one co-existing with the other.

I've owned Himalayas (similar to long-haired Siamese), Calicos, and just normal garden-variety cats. I've owned chihuahuas, German Shepherds, Shelties, Australian Shepherds, and mutts.

Not a problem from any of 'em. Maybe it's just luck of the draw... who knows?

Go with an animal that suits the lifestyle you live with each other, Legzman ... not just one she's gonna like or you're gonna like. Know what I mean?

Good luck. :)

My advice if somebody is going to get a dog at a shelter just as a pet and not for some specific purpose is to get a mutt, (if you are going to get it for a purpose go don't get it from the shelter) preferably one from breeds of dogs that aren't troublesome or mean. We have bread dogs for the wrong reasons for a long time now to get dumb unneeded characteristics. Americans have screwed up so many breads of dogs that unless you get them from a breeder that really knows what they are doing, (a very small minority of even registered breeders) you're more likely to get a dog with no defects or problems by getting a mutt because of all the inbreeding and line breeding that has been done to the standard breads of dogs. Plus the dog is more likely to be smarter. You can't imagine all the stupid dogs I have seen.

So pick one based on yard size, for example? Something that would be happy here? I'm sure a greyhound would be very bored here. As would most larger breed dogs. But I hate the little yippity ankle bitters! A mid-size mutt would be best I believe!

Right.

If you have the typical yard size (1/4 acre, I believe ... a 75' W x 50' L lot is average) then a Greyhound isn't the best choice for an outdoor dog. My opinion only, though. Greyhounds are very lanky, lean, and they need to run a LOT. Sad thing is they also are prone to health problems ... 'specially arthritis in the hips and rear quarters. They can also jump the standard sized four foot chain link fences easily when they're in good health. They are very loyal dogs, though ... very loyal; especially the bitches.

Shepherds, Collies, Pit Bulls, and other large dogs should be okay with this amount of room, though. Mid-sized dogs adapt fairly well to any decent-sized area. Smaller dogs ... lmao. I ain't even goin' there with the little ankle biters.

Frisbee dogs! But again the yard size wouldn't allow much room for that and there is no good park within walking distance.

I guess we'll go and look into the greyhound thing, then the shelter and see what we can see! I'm sure the people at both places will be helpful as well! I would assume they'd want what's best for the dog after all...or at least they should. So if a dog is to big for our space, they'd let us know.

Oh fuck no! Little scrawny good for nothing pieces of shit! Do nothing but nibble at the ankles!
