What is the definition of the term overrated?

Is it that a large group of people think highly of it and you dont?

We see many "who's the most overrated pornstars on this forum", and all we seem to get are people listing a bunch of name without much real explanation as to why they feel these people are overrated, and what their definition of overrated is. Does everyone conform to the statement that I have written above in bold, because surly if this is the case, why are so many people putting the same names down?

Or is it just a dissliking for this particular person, or piece of music or film, because we also get the same sort's of statements made in the film and music threads we have here. "That movie is overrated", "that band is overrated", by whom I ask? And why should the views of other members or people in the outside world (wherever that is) dictate to you what you should or shouldnt like? No one has to like everything else everyone else likes, unless you live under some sort of fascist leader I have never heard of.

The term seem's to have become a term of criticism without need of explanation. Why, do you think this person is overrated and what does that mean to you? Just in saying, for example Jenna Jameson is overrated means nothing, because the questions above still apply, overrated by whom and why should you care what others think? The use of "overrated" as a criticism seems strange to me, I'm sure I'm guilty of doing it from time to time but I'll overlook that because I'm asking the question and because I'm asking the question, that means I am God!

But I just want to ask you, the good people of FreeOnes, what does Overrated mean to you?

I think it has to do with the mainstream public. Most people don't know who Mariah Milano or Audrey Bitoni are... but, they all sure as hell know Jenna Jameson, therefore she becomes popular by default.. The bulk of America isn't into the porn names, so they have nobody to compare to..

When someone or something gets more positive attention than is deserved.

If it's something that isn't subjective it's not always just a mater of opinion. A better definition might be, "Something that isn't as good as it's perceived to be." Also notice that overrated and poor aren't mutually inclusive. It's entirely possible for somebody to do well at what they do or maybe even be great at it and still be overrated if people see them as being better than what they are.

But "good" is still a perception.

For example, even if there are two objects and one is of objectively higher quality than the other, whether it's better is still a question of circumstance.

verb (used with object), -rat⋅ed, -rat⋅ing. to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate: I think you overrate their political influence
hey sure im a smartass but you ask What is the definition of the term overrated? so there it is .

by the way yes i do need some sleep so please ignore everything i just typed thank you and good night

I agree with wictionary's definition:

1.Given an undue amount of credit for quality or merit in a field; not necessarily related to popularity.

most people are just basing such a term on their own subjective experience of the mood that they perceive, which is not necessarily accurate. But that can usually be said by any general opinion, regarldess of the subject.

Citing your sources would be nice, but it just isn't the rule of thumb for a casual opinion. Although, i'd say that Freeones is a perfect place to make an informed statement when it comes to porn demographics since we have the opportunity to hear very much about what porn audiences think, and to a lesser degree, even professionals.

who's merriam webster? she wasn't listed on the freeone's database.

Maybe I should have said, "at the level it's perceived to be". instead. "Good" or "better" could be a good description of something where having more or less of something is obviously better or by definition of certain things is better than the alternative. If you can quantify an aspect of something and find out that it's not what it's perceived to be you could call it overrated if it's worse.

Like for example if people think an athlete helps his team win a certain number of games more than if he wasn’t there and statistical analysis finds out it’s not as high as the general perception is he could be considered overrated and not as “good” since almost by the definition of what it is he does “good” and “better” are not subjective measurements in that context.

Now if we are talking about somebody that’s an artist for example, then it’s pretty much impossible to separate subjectivity from the view of his skill, and it’s just purely opinion.

"D-Rock" if someone or something is able to be underrated or overrated, then by definition it is being judged and therefore given over to subjectivity.

You may even objectively judge something (by being a disinterested 2nd or 3rd party) and your judgement still be a product of subjectivity (your own perspective).

Again, IMO overrated means receiving more positive attention than is deserved. i.e. I receive more praise than any other donor for donating money to some Charity but I've donated the least amount money to that same Charity. At that point, I could be considered an overrated donor IMO.

everything is subjective- or are there some people who receive direct psychic messages that aren't filtered through their own experiences?

maybe, but probably not most people.

Not everything. 25 lbs. weighs more than 20 lbs. for example. One car travels 1/4 mile faster/quicker than another. Those are objective tests...but the quality of something being overrated (or underrated) is a matter of deserved, positive attention IMO.

There is a difference between quantitative and qualitative terms. Quantitive terms are measurable by numbers, expressed in some units (which implies comparison to a well known thing) and thus comparable. Qualitative terms, such as overrated, are not measurable. You can only resort to phylology and analyze words. In this sense, you can see that overrated is something that is is rated too much. It does not give any information on what this "too much" means. So the term is subjective and it is likely that two independently thinking individuals will not agree on what is and what is not overrated.

No disagreement. The question (essentially) was what is overrated (and by extension does such a concept exist)?

I believe such a concept exists and I stated what I thought it meant earlier.

Of course it exists, but the meaning depends on an individual. So there's no factual background, no yardstick and no other objective means that two people could use to reach an agreement on.

Also, there is another thing. You can not just say, for example, that is Jenna Jameson overrated (since the starting post kinda went there). You have to state "in what". She is the most successful pornstar, I believe, so there is a fact. She can not be overrated on that. I do however think that Club Jenna is overrated as a production house, since I think that best Jenna's movies were shot by Wicked Pictures and that Club Jenna hasn't released a pornstar of Jenna's magnitude. Also, one could say that Spice Girls are self-overrated, since they were (in my opinion, again) never really spice, but managed to convince many people so.

On the other hand, if one happens to like skinny goth girls deep throating seven guys and a goat, he will probably think Jenna is overrated, because he won't be able to see any point in her - not today not 15 years ago.

Sighhh..."MrJerry are you serious? Not to be too technical but the meaning is not subjective...the application is.

You can say (for example) Jenna Jameson is overrated and the context ought to be understood as her as a overall porn star...it most certainly wouldn't be her as a cook or a driver, etc. Unless it was further asked as an anal performer, lesbo, etc.

Of course we can say something or someone is overrated as it stands as merely an opinion based on the subjectivities of the person judging.

In my opinion she's overrated based on the criteria I use to judge porn chicks...She may not be in your opinion but isn't that why polls are conducted? To see what, if any (albeit unscientific) consensus may be reached?
