Over 40

I had my 42nd birthday in the last couple of months and I think my age is starting to catch up with me. Not to drone on and sound like a Viagra commercial, long story short, I'm not feeling myself lately. Less energy, lower libido, just lethargic and uninspired. Anyone else going though or been through something similar? Any advice, strategies, or cures? Cures would really be great. I'm feeling like a Cobra without any venom, you know, like a belt. Anyway, all opinions, anecdotes, and piss takes welcome.

Lucy the Psychiatrist from the Peanuts cartoon will give you some good advice for 5 cents. :D

Seriously ... Multi-vitamins ... Exercise. :yesyes:
I just finished the exercise part a couple of minutes ago. Sweat up a storm. Whew! Of course, getting into and maintaining an exercise regimen takes some doing ... a shit load of discipline and determination. Even me, I already have a regimen going, but sometimes it JUST ISN'T THERE! Some days the mental aspect won't be there and other days the physical part won't be there - (fatigue) and a session just won't get off the ground. It'll pretty much become obvious within 5 or 10 minutes that that session is DOA. Doh! On those occasions I'll just go, "Okay, quit fucking wasting time. Abort. Go watch TV or go back to checking out FreeOnes because this exercise session is not going anywhere."

For what it's worth (which is probably nothing lol) I anticipated the same thing happening when I turned 40, and for a short time it turned into kind of a self fulfilling prophecy.

But then I got myself out and about more. The greater social contact alone was invigorating, and I quickly found that I hadn't lost it at all. On the contrary, I had more women interested in me in my 40s than I had in any other decade, which led to having not just more but also generally better sex than I'd had when I was younger and less experienced.

The exercise suggestion is good too. I started swimming regularly in my 40s and that was definitely beneficial.

Of course, it could also be a medical issue causing the lack of energy. Only a medical checkup could determine whether you have a lack or too much of something in your system, resulting in your BLAH feeling.

The first thing that pops in my head is trying to get the testosterone flowing. I heard doing manly things helps it produce. One of the examples I heard an argument for was some light lifting. I've been doing it for about a week myself. Results are pretty quick, actually.

Hitting the gym is always a good way to get that extra energy flowing. Plenty of ladies to look at for all kinds of inspiration too. A nice walk in the sunshine getting your body moving is some good cardio to do. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and eat right. Drink plenty of water. Try to deal with stress the best way you can manage it.

Boys, I am turning 51 on next wednesday. You think you are old at 40, go on for another decade.

Then again: look at Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Lenny Kravitz, Sarah Palin, Nicolas Cage, Monica Belucci, Michelle Obama, ...

You can be fit and have fun at almost any age. You are old if you feel old and act old.

I'd also have to say progressive resistance with a high protein diet. Its supposed to trigger testosterone and prevent bone loss.

For libido, make it a point to check out women more especially in the summer months when they're walking around in really tight shorts and revealing tops. And to add to the excitement and also a dose of adrenaline, comment to them on how sexy they look especially if they happen to be with their boyfriend and what not.

And above all else, don't break a hip ; )

Getting old sucks.

You're only as old as you feel. I had my birthday a couple of weeks ago and although my eyes are not as good as they used to be and my knees click when I climb stairs I still feel like an 18 year old.

The only problem is that I can't find any 18 year olds interested in a 52 year old.

Yeah I've heard that broken hips don't heal very well once you're old.

Yep. Turned 50 a couple of weeks ago...the only thing that hasn't changed, is my desire to drink beer, and my animosity towards the world. I'm guessing when I die, they'll find me surrounded by 100 cats, and every ball from every kid within a 1/2 mile radius of my house.

I would say 2 things, a hobby and try some fitness and healthy food. plus try a lot of sports. age is not a limit.

Thanks for the inputs. I probably don't get as much exercise as I should but I've started changing that, and the desire to do it has a lot to do with why I'm concerned. I've always been active and try to eat right, well, I do like a good binge from time to time, I'll try an attitude check, push through more gym time and add some light cardio. I've had a situation that's kept me semi-housebound for the last few months, some sunshine and fresh air will probably do me a world of good. Thanks again!

Several years back when my older brother was barely around 50, he already kept saying, "DAMN! I already feel like I am 65!" It didn't help that since he really loves to eat, he gained a lot of weight. And he didn't and still doesn't get any exercise. And he has a job that while it pays extremely well, it and its hours were extremely brutal. He changed shifts every 2 weeks for years. That's definitely not good for the B-o-d-y and certainly not good for feeling energetic. Only within the last 2 months has he finally gotten a different position where he'll only work on day shift and not be changing between 3 shifts every 2 weeks.

As per my mom, apparently last month my brother claimed he was going to "get on a diet and start getting some exercise." I WISH I could believe that, but unfortunately I don't see that happening because aside of having let things get out of hand for a bit too long, he also has some health issues that will make it very difficult to work in that exercise.
