Out of the "recession"? The Washington Post weighs in

Here's the article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/30/AR2009103003785.html

A few quotes from the article:

Just a day later, the big gains were wiped away after a new batch of data underscored those lingering concerns, showing that consumer spending fell 0.5 percent in September. Although some kinds of consumer spending showed new signs of life, overall it was the biggest decline in nine months.

"The government handed the ball off to the consumer and the consumer fell on it," said Robert G. Smith, chairman of Smith Affiliated Capital in New York. "This is a function of there being no jobs and wages going lower."

Not the strongest argument but I think it makes a few good points. We have a long was to go before we can claim "Growth":2 cents:

Nothing like to have the government print and give out bailouts and handouts left and right, but people have nothing to spend it on.

It's not over... in fact, I think it's going to get even worse before it gets better. They are simply propping up the conomy right now with borrowed money, like paying your bills with a credit card. Sooner or later, all those bills come due.

what the fuck you lookin at?

Because the government gives the bailouts to the wrong people. Fuck these giant corporations. Split the money up and give it to the american people. Not a lousy 600 bucks like GWB gave out, but thousands. Might do the trick, probably not, but fuck it I'll take a few grand for free! Fuck it, Obama's throwing money around like sand in the desert. I just want my piece!

This is the worst possible thing you could do. Plus he is killing jobs and driving more out of the country with his stupid fuckin green laws.

All someone needs to do is look at the Post's coverage of the gubernatorial election in Virgina in order to weigh the validity of their viewpoint.

Good news validates Obama, bad news doesn't get printed.

True, but the Dem candidate Deeds in VA is terrible and has as much shot of winning the election as the Congress does of sending a balanced budget to Obama for FY10 ;)

The article doesn't have real strong points but I think it does a little justice to the fact that other news casters over play "growth" and made what little actually happened into something huge which it was not. It is good to be positive and if it continues to grow that would be great. But its a waiting game at this point...:2 cents:

if we are out of the recession then how did CIT Group just go bankrupt after reciving the stimilus money months ago? Nothing like blowing the tax payers money.

True... and the one American car company that didn't get a bailout (Ford) just posted a billion dollar profit. Coincidence?

In a recession, you don't depend upon trickle down economics.
You get money to the small businesses and people and let them spend.

Small Businesses account for over half of all private jobs. 44 % of the total payroll. Have generated 64% of the net new jobs over the past 15 years.

Yet Obama and his big business only knowledgeable staff only want to bail out the big guys.

Get the money to small businesses, people will get jobs, the money will flow.

The biggest provider for small business CIT Group just went belly up. look for MORE unemployment in the comming months.

I'll wait until the long road has been uncovered.

Same here. I think its much to early to call off anything right now. If Michale Moore is so opposed to Corporations why didn't he go sit on on congressional hearings and persuade his precious Dems to revamp their stimulus bill?

I wonder too if he realizes he is a cooperation now?

sorry off topic I know...

Well that statement I made really had nothing to do with my initial post I just can't stand Michael Moore and I think he's a heartless bastrard only out for money.

But I think we have a long ways to go before we can say the recession is over. I just think its silly they choose the most unproductive month to make the claim.

Well, why wouldn't they? The most unproductive month is naturally when people would start to have doubts about the whole scheme....so they must "keep hope alive," as it were.
