Ordering Things Online...

When you place an order online and pay via debit card, why does it sometimes take 2-3 days to process your payment? Everywhere else I use my debit card, the payment instantly goes through, but when I order something online, it sometimes takes 2-3 days to go through.

I don't get it. :dunno:

The only reason I'm bringing this up is because it's :bs: in my opinion. I just ordered some new steel-toed chef shoes yesterday (boring, I know) and I paid an extra $20 or so to have them over-nighted because I need them ASAP. So, I checked my order status this morning to see where my package was at the moment. Well, oddly enough, my payment wasn't even processed yet and my order was still pending because it was awaiting payment verification. It said that it takes 2-3 days to process payments...:wtf: So, basically, I just dropped an extra $20 or so to have my package over-night for no reason at all. I paid money to have them delivered to me today, but I won't get them until next Monday or Tuesday now, just because it takes an unnecessary 2-3 days to verify my debit card payment.

So, does anybody know why it takes 2-3 days to process a debit card payment online?

I think its something to do with the speed in which the bank confirms it. Maybe?

Yes, but debit card purchases instantly go through, as they are directly connected to your checking account. It's just like running your card through a credit card machine...it takes mere seconds to verify your funds, not 2-3 days.

:dunno:

Well then I have no idea, it varies when I buy crap online also, I always thought it was because the bankers couldnt get off their asses and confirm it, but if its not that I have no idea!!!!!

Slighty off topic, but once I bought a holiday online off some travel site. I fucked up the dates though and needed to cancel/change it. Even though it took 3 days for my payment to get processed, they still refused any amendment or refund. I fucking hate buying shit on the internet unless it's real cheap. I learnt my lesson that day (lost £350).

I always order on line. I have found more than once that ordering something and paying a reasonable shipping rate gets it here within 24 hours. Amazing. A new keyboard ordered at 8pm for my laptop with $10 shipping got here in 20 hours, by 4pm the next day.

When you use your debit at local establishments you usually have to enter your PIN, or sign something, and when it's all digital, they want to make sure you have it all in the bank NOW, and that it's all available now, and not pending. Just an idea.

by 'things" you mean sex toys. it's Ok, chef, we know.

Exactly, the reason things go quickly at the store is because you are using your PIN number. However you are not using your PIN online, your card gets treated like a credit card. If you use your debit card like a credit card at a store by signing instead of using your PIN number it will take a few days for the payment to go through.

Naaaaah, not this time. Just good old cheffin shoes for work.

Entering your PIN has nothing to do with verifying your funds though. All it does it verify that you are the authorized user for that card.

Using your debit card to buy something online is exactly like somebody swipping your debit or credit card at Walgreens. The credit card machine reads the numbers on your card, instantly sends a message to your bank (or credit card company) to see if you have funds available and, if you do, it instantly deducts that money from your account. When you buy something online, it's doing the same exact thing, only you are entering your debit card # manually. So, it shouldn't take 2-3 days to verify.

I would call them up and cancel the order after that.

Yeah, credit cards are the way to go if you're buying stuff online and need it fast. Also, if they accept PayPal then you can take money out directly from your account through PayPal and it gets processed pretty much instantly.

I didn't want to start an entire thread just to ask this, so I figured I would ask it here, as it is kind of relevant to the topic at hand...

I am getting another order delivered and it is being delivered via USPS (United States Post Office). I had paid to have my package(s) delivered overnight, USPS Ground. When I go to the USPS website and track my package, it says...

Electronic Shipping Info Received, October 16, 2008
Processed, October 16, 2008, 6:15 pm, SANTA CLARITA, CA 91383
Acceptance, October 16, 2008, 5:14 pm, SYLMAR, CA 91342

FYI - I placed my order on October 14th.

Anyway, I wasn't sure if "processed" meant that the order was shipped yet or not, so, I called the USPS. When I talked to them on the phone, both people didn't know the answer to my question, which I found kind of odd. So...

Has anyone tracked a package, via USPS, and gotten this kind of information and, if so, does "processed" mean that it has been shipped already or no?

Pretty much it means that that location had your package and processed it. Your package has already been shipped off to the next location where they accepted it. Next order of business is probably processing it at the new location or shipping it off to the next location. I think this makes sense.

Hmm...so, you think that it was shipped from location A and it's currently on it's way to location B?

Location B, hopefully being my apartment?

I think that's right. I just recently received a package and that's pretty much how it played out.

I just wish they would tell you where it was headed after it says "processed". If it said...

"Processed at location A. Package now heading to Chicago, IL."

...I would feel a lot better about the whole situation. Stupid post office JERKS!!!

(Not you maildude)

I understand what you mean, but no that has never happened to me. I usually dont check for 3 or 4 days anyways because I always get basic shipping.

But I dont think all purchases go through right away, when I ever I buy gas it takes 3 or 4 days. The charge shows up as one dollar then 3 or 4 days later it shows up as the amount I spent.
