Opinion: Religion Is a Poison

I think that's the key to it right there...free will...so many people around the world, Europe and the US included, are driven in nearly everything they do by their religion. This, I believe, is very dangerous. I think religion can be good in shaping basic moral tenets and such, but I think those who take their religion with "a grain of salt" get more done and in a more peaceful fashion. For instance, I personally was raised Catholic and consider myself to still be, though non-practicing. However, my personal beliefs are tempered by an understanding that bible verses are thousands of years old and may not dictate what is "right" today. :2 cents:

PS-D-rock: hope i didn't misinterpret any of what you said ;)

Maybe a little bit. I agree with a lot of what you had to say.

I have beliefs about what is right and wrong and I don't believe in a "right today". I think things are either right or wrong based on my religious beliefs and don't think they change just because time changes. What I was referring to was the fact even in religion people should accept it because they have did thoughtful introspection and some soul searching within themselves and not just because it's what other people have always told them or it's the way it's always been. I think much of the institutions of religion are places of social control and not for spiritual growth anymore. They, like all things, have been influenced and controlled by people to get what they want and to make people do their bidding. I also think the teaching of religion have been warped to that effect. I would never think something just because a church said it. Maybe the most important thing should be for everybody to be their own spiritual leader. People should consider and decide for themselves and not have somebody do it for them.

In my understanding, the church does bend to the demands of the times. Allowing women priests, or gay relationships, or in WW2 or any conflict, blessing the troops, it attempts to bend to allow a greater number of attendees.

The Catholic settlement in Boston and now L.A. really shows you can't put your trust in it as a tradition. Huge damage was done to innocents and you can be sure they were told in the name of God.

I find it rather ironic that his brother, Peter Hitchens (a journalist), sees religion as one of the many ways Britain can revive its flagging society. There was an interesting debate in a Sunday newspaper between the two brothers.

They were on Question Time together a couple of months ago -- hilarious television. You could cut the brotherly love with a knife. ;)

Marx is the creator of one of a few standard sociological theories about how groups think and act. His ideas for the large part are distorted by those groups.

I suggest this is like saying the solar system "distorts" pre-Coperican astronomers' theories that the Earth was the center of the universe. Marx made some smart observations -- rich guys can be jerks -- but his overall approach was based largely on misguided anthropology (early man actually was not all that communal) and wishful thinking.

To the capitalists who say Marx was "wrong." What say you about the thriving Chinese and Vietnam economies? Or the military power of North Korea? If we "came correct" about our countries' greed and thirst for consuming cheap goods, we would normalize our relations with Cuba and help construct that country's nascent economy, if for nothing else, then to stem Cuban immigration and help us wean ourselves off of our Chinese "crack" habit. Our sovereignty and national interest depends on our ability to exert influence in trade negotiations with China. Isn't it obvious we, as a nation, don't really give a shit about communist states, post-Soviet Cold War?

Upton Sinclair was a Socialist and ran for Governor of California as a Socialist. He had a Dickensian effect on labor safety in this country.

AFA for President 2008.
