We've had this conversation before. Insulting the Cubs does not anger me in the least. I am a fan of the team. I do not make personnel decisions, nor am I on the field affecting the game. I am merely a spectator. Pointing out their deficiencies and failures does not harm me. I'm well aware of them, but I cannot do anything to change them. Do you know why I'm a Cubs fan? Gather around, it's story time.
When my ******* and I were in elementary school, my grandma would watch us after school or during summer vacation because my parents both worked. To say that my ******* and I were rowdy and obnoxious is an understatement. For the most part, we played outside as much as we could. But if we were inside, she knew the only way to placate us was to have something interesting to do. Both of us loved baseball. We started playing as soon as we could walk. Grandma was a casual fan when it came to baseball (diehard Purdue basketball fan). She would watch baseball if it was on, but only really paid attention to the Cubs. Well, whenever there was a Cubs game on, my ******* and I would sit down and watch it with her. That's how she got her peace during the day. As long as there was a game on, we were going to be occupied for a few hours. And that's how I started following the team. I grew up watching Sandberg, The Hawk, Dunston, Girardi, Grace, Walton, Maddux, and Sutcliffe. Regardless of their performance, there was never any doubt that they were my favorite team. And they always will be.
It was such an important part of my life that I touched on it when I gave my grandma's eulogy a couple of years ago. I reminisced about watching games with her and my *******, and how she was the reason that the both of us were Cubs fans today. We used to always tease our *** about this because he's a huge White Sox fan and yet both of his sons like their rival team instead. And we both have her to thank for that. So yeah, I'm a Cubs fan. But it's not like I jumped on a bandwagon or just chose a team to follow at random. I've always liked this team. And I'm going to be a fan for life. It's not always about winning and losing.
