Now THIS Would Make Me Cry.

What was in the OP was "tragic". But this terrible happening from 2011 was cause for a day of national mourning in both Japan and Italy. I bet the Pope even had some words of comfort when he heard the church bells in Maranello ringing and he realized there was no F1 race going on. Oh, the humanity!!!

:crying: :suicide:

I need a sedative.

A car like that, should have been delivered to it's spot in his collection, and only driven occasionally, when it's VERY nice outside. That car would have retained it's value, and it's not the kind of thing you should own, if that's all you're gonna own. Even if it's the only "other" car you have, you need an everyday car/truck for winter, work, all around use.

Although I gotta say, it would be hard to resist the temptation to stand on it, even on city streets, just once an awhile. It sure would be a blast to get it on a road course.

One of the good things about owning junkers my entire life is that the potential loss I have to face is limited. On the other hand loosing even those crappy cars would be just as bad in some ways as it's not like I need access to one any less just because it's not valuable.

Nah man. There is no point in having a car like that if you aren't going to drive it. Don't drive it everyday but drive it.

Yeah, but you wanna keep around 2 or 3 thousand a year, max, and you need to strictly follow the break in rules before you start getting into it, or using the second key, that unlocks all of the extra horse power, and if you use that key, you should be on a track, or sparsely populated road. Sometimes the asshole factor, isn't the owner.

A car like that is an investment...it might not appreciate like classic American muscle, but it won't go down like everyday American cars do.

He can order another Hellcat and maybe won't make the same mistake. What has made me cry is all the '68 to '70 Charger that were wreck in various shows and movies because they are not made anymore. Or various cars where the numbers matched but someone decided exchange the engine for a crate. The last one is up to the owner of course but they could have started with one that was not as rare. I wrecked my '69 Charger R/T when I was 19 so I have some "blood" on my hands (thanks to a drunk driver). I've been into cars since Hot Wheels & SSP cars (still have one with the "T" stick). I will probably continue to be until I'm too old to remember my name. Even then I think I will still be into cars.

Right here at Christmas time, you brought back one of my best childhood memories: finding a T-stick SSP under the tree. I hadn't thought about that in forever. You're gonna make me tear up here. Thanks, man. Seriously. Thanks.

Just another reason that I feel so sorry for kids being born these days. They don't know what real fun and action is. Remember the vicious sound these things made when you pulled the T-stick? :nanner:

Man I loved those things the SSP! I would get blisters between my index and middle finger from revving them up. Very simple design but man it was fun. Had the teeth on the T-stick that you ran through the big gyro wheel gear thing and give it a yank! Lightning fast. Yeah I remember the whizzing sound of the SSP like it was yesterday and also it kinda gave off a unique smell like burning rubber or something! Those were the days! I also loved the Hot Wheels Sizzlers. I am sure this is where my love of cars was born.

Thx guys. The one I have is the '74 Vette in green. I took it the job and all the men there became kids. The ladies there just shook their heads. I had a blue Vette with the flint wheel. I had the Hot Wheels Thunder Shift 500. I also had the SSP Smash Up Derby.

I think the SSP I had was modeled after the rocket car that broke the land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats. I believe it was called The Blue Flame.

ETA: This was it! lol

Oh man, you had electric Hot Wheels. :hatsoff: We just had the plastic tracks that you had to start up high on the stairway, down the steps, across the floor, make a curve, and back up the couch. I had this little green Porsche 917(?) that could take about any curve without flipping off. But my friends voted and banned it, cause I could always win with it.

And yeah, you guys are right. This is exactly where my love of cars and racing (obsession) began. The Indy/Grand Prix car that my uncle gave me one Christmas (I think I was 6 or 7) is where I developed a love of formula cars. And the next thing ya knew, I was reading about F1 races in distant, unknown, foreign lands like Monaco, Spa and Monza. And then I learned about the Indy 500 and then CART was born years later.

Thanks for those pics and memories, guys.

Another great childhood memory was when my uncle who was only about 10 years older than me would take me to this strip mall that had a slot car track at it. All these guys racing their cars around and around on this huge electric track that took half the space of the store . I had a little electric track but these cars were huge and fast!. I could have lived and slept there and been happy.

How about that?! My buddy had a Smash Up Derby car! And as best I can recall, the SSP I had was like the one that Blue Countach had. Seems like I had one that had the dual cowls/cockpits, like the one in the picture, and another that was like the Bonneville land speed car. Remember how the teeth on the T-sticks would eventually wear out and you'd have to pray that your parents could get you a replacement... or you'd take the T-stick out of a new one, that you didn't like as much, and use it?

I guess it's right what they say about men and boys: the only thing that changes is the price of our toys. But ain't that the funnest way to live life? :yesyes:

I really like the 1973 Charger Michael Westen drives in Burn Notice... classic, clean, mean.

I probably still could. And that's how I am when I go to VIR, whether I'm running my car or just watching other people. I'm not joking when I say I want to retire to that area. That really is the plan. Don't know if I'll be able to afford a vintage formula car and a house, but I'll have something interesting to putter around in down there. When I sell the cars I have now, we'll see what I can buy when that time comes.

I mine was called the Lake Speed Racer. It was cherry red. Similar to this.

The smash up derby cars were a VW bug and a pickup truck. The other set had a '57 Chevy. I used to exchange the T-Sticks because I could not find the replacements at the toy store.

I just saw BC's picture and it's the same car but a different color.

Mine was a deep blue or purple. I am going to buy one on Ebay right now if I can find it.
