I just went through this issue in a thread. I was one to complain about this one post-whoring idiot intent on reposting everything already existing on the thread in triplicate. An all too obvious effort at simply increasing post and rep count. So whats really more annoying? The post whores making it impossible to check previous posts or the ones reminding the reposters of what they are doing? So, I complain with a couple others and a mod scolds the complainers and not the post-whore ! This is the ONLY forum (among the many) I've ever visited where I've seen this.
Of course there will be reposts on big threads but, when you see a thread (like the one I was just on) going 13 pages when it should only be 1/3 that, the post count freaks are just getting out of control ! Thats the reason the "thats a repost" comment is getting more frequent. When the reposters get under control so will their counterparts.
I made a suggestion to the mod. Dicontinue the rep count for a few days and see where the post-whores hearts really are. They couldnt give a damn about content, which is what this forum's primary purpose is supposed to be.
Thank you for letting me vent this out. :hatsoff:
I realize the above post and my reply are not technically what poggy was complaining about in this thread. So I hope he does not mind if I post this because I think there is some relevance.
You maybe right that some people do post after post to get their post counts up. And there is a side to that that may end up frustrating people.
And there are threads of ladies that I subscribe to that when I have a reminder that a new post is in that I will usually go and check out fairly quickly, if not right away (depending on my mood). And when I check it and it's an obvious repost it is a bit frustrating.
But what are the alternatives? As far as I can see these would be some of them:
1) Have the mods go through each post to check if it is a link that is frequently reposted.
That seems ideal but incredibly impractical. My guess is FreeOnes would need to increase it's number of mods by a factor of 10.
2) Encourage posters to check through the previous posts to make sure their intended link has yet to be posted?
I can answer that by typing that there is NO way that I could be bothered to go through hundreds of posts (that would probably take many, many minutes) just to see if my link has been posted before. Usually when I post a link (not very often - I admit) it is a spur of the moment thought. Not one I wish to spend tonnes of time checking on. And if I had to check through a thread - even a fairly short one - before I post a link; then I guarantee you I would almost never post a link. It's just not THAT important to me.
And I imagine that would be what many posters of links would think about it. And that would defeat the major purpose of this board - IMO.
3) Do a search.
I tried that just now for a few links and usually all I get is no response or hundreds of responses. So that seems not really practical either.
The fact that on the spur of the moment someone can post up a link here without worry is one of the best things about FreeOnes. It invites more people to do so. Which means more links. Which means more content. Yes, it also means more duplicates.
But I think that is a small price to pay. I will take relative freedom over more rules anytime.
But I do like the way you stated your case - for what it's worth to you.
And this is why people post apologies (to tie this post in with this thread properly), I assume. They realize that they are quite possibly posting a re-post. Especially if the thread has dozens of pages. And it is a natural human reaction to want to apologize for doing something that you realize will piss off a minority of people.
Sorry if this posts length is too long for some people.
(See. I just did it myself unintentionally).
