Why does the possibility of a North American Union seem so off the charts ? If anything it's already underway and we don't "really" know it yet. Just think, it might really be for the better, who knows ? Our currency is so far in the crapper today, for example, if you were in Bombay and you wanted to exchange American Dollars for rupee you're looking at -

We don't need a world economy. We don't need growth. We don't need highways transporting petroleum as if life can be and will be sucked out of a bottle.
In fact, if you think about it, we can rely on horses for transport, if it comes to that. Might as well work from home, right? In the future anyway. What the heck. We are supposed to go forwards so we can improve everything, minimise our impact, lead productive, peaceful lives.
With more consumerism, we burn what is left of our still fair planet to a crisp, with absolutely no regard to the subsequent generations. 'Growth' equals more factories, more products, more and more and more of crap we really don't need.
Who needs 20 different kinds of purified bottled water? 40 different kinds of energy drinks? All of this stuff churning out of factories because 'our economy must grow.' It is such an antiquated, shortsighted, myopic, ancient concept that harks back to the time of ancient civilisations. Expansion, no matter what the cost, who carries the burden, or who is left behind to pick up the pieces.

Because we have the most to loose. We have a Constitution, that guarantees us certain rights. Rights Canada, and Mexico don't have. The problem with most people is, they see little things happening, and scoff at it, and then claim the people that see the big picture are wackos, or are over reacting. The little things that happen, don't mean anything...then the culmination of all of the little things come to a head, and make one giant thing, or worse, the second shoe drops, and it's to late, then the people that claimed, there was nothing to worry about, start whining about all the bullshit that's coming down around them. Or worse, they welcome it.
A few quick points.
1. This craziness about some sinister meaning to 'new world order" is just that craziness.Better to have world order then dis-order isn't it? After WW2 we created the UN with the same reasoning ,lets have more cooperation and discussion in the world and avoid another major war.The world has changed and is more connected.
2.Europe is becoming a union and while it has not always been a perfect coming together I think they all know they are much stronger together than apart.Europe IMO with all the seperate countries was like the US having all the states be seperate little countries.Some would be fairly powerfull on their own and do well and some wouldn't.The US was much stronger since we were one big united country.Europe will be much better off in union.
Thats what this is about with canada and mexico we will be stronger as an economic union.Are their concerns? Yes their are.We need to work on not letting things like enviormental standards,wage and worker protections go to the lowest common denominator.These are some of the same kinds of issues the europeans face.
We can't just stick our heads in the sand and think we can ignore the reality of the world and how interconnected it is.
It's interesting to me that really this is not a partisan political issue.Republicans and democrates alike have discussed why this is an important thing for the US to do.
On so many issues though you get these really uninformed whacks crying about "new world order" and "follow the constitution" and those damn Rokelfellers.And trying to say their is a secret plan to move the world to some soviet style communist govt.That just makes them sound ludicrous IMO.
As I said we do have to make sure people are not forgotten in all this and its not just about more prosperity.But things are going to change like it or not and we would be better off being engaged and not just letting it be a messy unguided process.
