The rich get richer and the poor continue to get poorer. This holds true in almost every way for most Americans. Unless, of course, you're a person whose sole purpose is to entertain fans such as an NFL player, then you're paid millions of dollars a year to exert yourself physically and mentally for a few months a year, while the other months are spent playing golf and vacationing out of the country at one of your multiple homes. It's a tough life.
Most Americans' lives would change forever if they had just $1 million, not to mention being paid lucrative salaries that spanned millions of dollars over three to four year spans. This would enable them to live comfortably for the rest of their lives while working a menial job, if they even chose to do that.
So it shocks me that any of these same Americans even have the audacity to open their mouths and say they deserve it. Most of us have all played a sport at one time or another in our lives, and the physical toll it took on our bodies was probably also felt. Some of us may have even incurred an injury while on our respective field/court. But some of us have also been injured in horrible car accidents, or tripped at a store and broke a bone. Either way the odds a football player has of hurting himself are really not that much more than an average citizen hurting themselves while driving to work for the day.
So think for a second about the money you spent for your football tickets last year, parking, the beer and food you bought to tailgate, gas you bought to drive to the stadium, the conditions of the weather you may have endured to watch your favorite athlete take the field, the stadium food you purchased, the hours you spent planning, the work you may have taken off, and add all that up. That same athlete made more than that just by walking out onto the field.
I am not sure when we decided to start paying these players insurmountable sums of money to entertain us, but something needs to be done. If it takes billionaire owners getting richer in order to prove this point, I'll take it.
And to all the bus drivers, custodians, teachers and every other service employee who is underpaid, thank you for doing your job on a daily basis, and continuing to do it even though your life may never be as great as the players' are.
