NFL players have no right to demand more money

The rich get richer and the poor continue to get poorer. This holds true in almost every way for most Americans. Unless, of course, you're a person whose sole purpose is to entertain fans such as an NFL player, then you're paid millions of dollars a year to exert yourself physically and mentally for a few months a year, while the other months are spent playing golf and vacationing out of the country at one of your multiple homes. It's a tough life.

Most Americans' lives would change forever if they had just $1 million, not to mention being paid lucrative salaries that spanned millions of dollars over three to four year spans. This would enable them to live comfortably for the rest of their lives while working a menial job, if they even chose to do that.

So it shocks me that any of these same Americans even have the audacity to open their mouths and say they deserve it. Most of us have all played a sport at one time or another in our lives, and the physical toll it took on our bodies was probably also felt. Some of us may have even incurred an injury while on our respective field/court. But some of us have also been injured in horrible car accidents, or tripped at a store and broke a bone. Either way the odds a football player has of hurting himself are really not that much more than an average citizen hurting themselves while driving to work for the day.

So think for a second about the money you spent for your football tickets last year, parking, the beer and food you bought to tailgate, gas you bought to drive to the stadium, the conditions of the weather you may have endured to watch your favorite athlete take the field, the stadium food you purchased, the hours you spent planning, the work you may have taken off, and add all that up. That same athlete made more than that just by walking out onto the field.

I am not sure when we decided to start paying these players insurmountable sums of money to entertain us, but something needs to be done. If it takes billionaire owners getting richer in order to prove this point, I'll take it.

And to all the bus drivers, custodians, teachers and every other service employee who is underpaid, thank you for doing your job on a daily basis, and continuing to do it even though your life may never be as great as the players' are.

If they can be cut at anytime, they should be able to ask for a raise anytime. Millions of dollars are made off of these players contributions onthe field and they get paid accordingly.

They also have careers that generally only last about 10 years at best and they can wind up with long-term damage to their bodies they have to live with for the rest of their lives.

Forget about the players for a second.

The NFL as an enterprise generates billions of dollars every year. Why? Because it entertains millions of people every year.

Since the enterprise is worth as much as it is, the players having major roles in this function are entitled to a commensurate part of it's profit (potential).

It has nothing to do with how easy we think they have it (they don't actually), the worth of the skill nor the value of their societal contribution.

They are entertainers in an enterprise worth billions. It's that simple.

It may be easy for someone like Tom Brady to ride out a strike since he has a wife which tends to make as much or more than he does. But the average player including Brady is not happy about losing a year off of what are otherwise very short careers to begin with.

When you consider the average players career is 2 or 3 years....now their losing 1 and all the checks that were apart of their contracts and games they never get back.

They have all the right to ask for more. As was said above, they risk bodily injury on a weekly basis, the NFL is making more money then ever, the average career is 3 and a half seasons. We only seem to focus on the "Superstars", but there is alot of guys in the NFL that are not making the huge contracts and still risk everything on the field.

Its all about market sharw.

If employees are making 25% of the profits...then 20 years later the employees are only accounting for 8% of the profits. It isnt about "worth" its about profit sharing

Isn't America the country of liberalism ?

So why are the salaries so regulated in sports ? Teams should be allowed to give players as much as they want, as long as the team has the money.

The Op is a fucking moron and a liar. The NFL players association isn't asking for more money, in fact many current players are infuriated by the owners practice of giving untried rookies upwards of $50,000,000 in guaranteed money, while current players don't have guarantees of any kind in regards to money/contracts.

Idiot.

The NFLPA is also against an 18 game regular season (you cant say i'll pay you $2000 a week with the assumption of a week being 40 hours then turn around once i agree and tell me to work 60 hours)

the owners want it because they are seeking more revenue to pay foe their stadiums (where they are subsidized by city taxes)

How do you feel about salaries of actors?

It chaps my hide to hear overpaid athletes say something like, "I have to feed and clothe my family." REALLY? And you can't do that with your current $10 million a year? Sheesh!

I am equally enraged by those athletes whose salaries are so fucking high that they take up an enormously high percentage of the entire team's payroll, thus making it difficult to get a quality supporting cast of talent because 1 or 2 players are hogging the payroll.

I am in favor of something being done about rookies', especially #1 Draft Picks' salary demands. They keep going higher and higher, which then get passed on to the ticket prices.

They can ask for what ever they want. Eventually they will shot the league in the foot because no one will have money to pay them as fans will stop going do to the expense. Then it will either go back to the good old days where all the players had other jobs in the off season and play for the love of the game or at least in some places it will die off possibly

Yep, it's mind-boggling when you check out the salaries of some of the Football Stars of way back in the days of say, the 1st Super Bowl. Some actually had salaries along the lines of what us regular people make. They weren't Fur Coat-wearing, Bling-loving, Entourage-having Divas back then.

It's now to the point that one probably has to get a loan to be able to go to an NFL Football game.

What about the construction workers, highway patrol, firefighters, etc. that risk their bodies evreyday? They can work their entire lives and not make as much as an NFL player does in one season.

Ummm, did you miss out on ole Broadway Joe Namath?

Those guys are all paid by the government who has to spread out billions of dollars to millions of people. They are not some private multi-billion dollar corporation that has to spread out billions of dollars to thousands of people. I am not saying those guys don't deserve a six figure salary for what they do, but the system they are in currently keeps them from doing such.

True...but you must have never heard of 'Broadway Joe' though.:o

It's like every marketplace with supply and demand elasticity. When people stop paying for the tickets then the NFL will know they're charging too much and cut ticket prices.

What about the construction workers, highway patrol, firefighters, etc. that risk their bodies evreyday? They can work their entire lives and not make as much as an NFL player does in one season.

Construction workers, HWY Patrol, firefighters, etc. will start making NFL, MLB, Network TV Star, Blockbuster movie star money when the industries they're in generate the kind of revenue the latter generates.

You are woefully uninformed. I would type more if I wasn’t drunk.

The one and only.
Both sides are equally greedy and share the blame.

I don't give a flying fuck if they play next season or not. As long as I have college basketball, the NHL, and the MLB, I don't really need anything else. The NFL has always been my third favorite sport to watch. Let 'em take a year off.

i think nfl should ask for more money because they can get hurt on any play and that is their career. also, most good nfl players have an average game span of 4-5 years where they are dominant and then they are done. so why not get the most money when you are at your peak and set yourself up for life.
