Nationalism

What immediately pops into your mental landscape when I mention the political and governmental concept of, 'Nationalism?'

I am not asking for subjective definitions - simply positive or negative thoughts on the political concept.

Namely, 'Nationalists,' and 'Nationalism?'

While not inherently bad IMO something like nationalism for sure can be.Just as patriotism which is closely related.Here is some interesting stuff on it from Wik.

i think of Germany. not just the Third Reich but the 2nd Reich that Hitler spoke of was highly nationalistic and probably the 1st nationalistic country ever.

Many historians consider The Napoleonic Era in France to be the first overt display of nationalism leading to war.

When i think of nationalism, my country Turkey comes to my mind. I mean Turkey from the year 1923 to 1938. In that era, nationalist ideas reached its mature from in Turkey. Before 1923 and even 1919, Turkish people didn't have an image of being Turkish, they saw themselves as a part of global Islamic community. Ataturk created the image of being a Turkish very well. His nationalism is not compulsory like Hitler's and Stalin's. According to Ataturk, a nationalist people is the one who loves his/her country and works for its prosperity and also Ataturk's original Turkish nationalism is not based on a certain racial and religious base, "Whoever loves Turkey and feels himself/herself as a Turkish is a Turkish". After Ataturk's death, his nationalism concept was exploited and it was made as "A true Turkish has to be a Turkic and a muslim." which is still alive. I **** that post-1938 and exploited concept very much, it reminds me Hitler's point of view to nationalism.

Ataturk created the image of being a Turkish very well. His nationalism is not compulsory like Hitler's and Stalin's

just to the point: Stalin was not nationalist at all. Communism and nationalism are not compatible at all. Both of them were assholes, but they were different.

Thanks for correcting me. I think i should have used wrong word in this "His nationalism is not compulsory like Hitler's and Stalin's", i should have used ideology instead of nationalism.
