I've always loved ELO. I brought most of their
albums on vinyl and then bought the CD's when
they came out. Some critics said they were
what the Beatles would have sounded like
if they had stayed together during the 70's
and 80's. Rock on!

Radiohead is Alternative Rock, not Art Rock, and even that term sucks, the real one is Progressive Rock. And Captain Beefheart is Psychedelic rock and Rush sounds more like Hard-Rock (yet experimental but..)

I'm not up on my terms, but if Art Rock is progressive rock, then I would say my favorite band in the category is Muse. I consider them to be progressive rock, though they have certainly hit the mainstream lately (at least here in the US). I think the fact that they've gone mainstream though is more due to people finally discovering them rather than them abandoning their style and technique.

Well prog rock tends to be a term used whenever there is creativity in rock, Muse is not a prog rock band, it's pure alt-rock.

Pink Floyd? Oh, you mean pompous-ass art rock.

No Zappa? What's up with that?
Zappa
Beefheart
Crimson, 71-74 version.
Floyd, 1st one and a quarter albums.
Shaggs.
Melvins, earlier stuff. Lysol, Eggnog, &c. Trudge art at its finest.
Shonen Knife.

Well, even though you state it like it is fact, that's certainly just your opinion. I think Muse is progressive rock.
As do these sites:

Wikipedia
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2122 Just the fact that they are listed on this site inidicates something?

I'm sure there are links for your side of the argument too, just wanted to support my opinion and show that others share it. :)

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
I just got an interesting e-mail and I thought I would share it...

Dear ChefChiTown,

I was just browsing the FreeOnes website and came across a thread in which people were voting for their favorite Art Rock bands. Although all of the band choices are exceptionally talented and have actually been a delightful inspirational to my own music career, I did notice that my band was left off of the list.

I am writing you so you may deliver a message to your fellow FreeOnes community members. The message is as follows:

I get knocked down, but I get up again. No, you're never gonna keep me down.

You may have left us off of the list...this time...but we'll be back. Oooooh, we'll be back and we'll be singing when we're winning.

G'day to you sir.

Sincerely,

Boff Whalley
Lead Singer, Chumbawamba

Pink Floyd are the most consistent here, and the most lyrically brilliant, as well as the most commercially successful, but I'd say Yes are the greatest.

They have existed for 40 years, produced lots of albums, had over a dozen members, and always bounce back from the odd disappointing album, with another excellent one. They are all superb instrumentalists, but who play as a unified band _ rather than arrogant show-off soloing a al ELP.

The harmonies in Yes are the best of any art rock group.

Their music is always recognisably Yes-like, even though they have attempted lots of styles.

When they are at their best, there really is nothing more beautiful, powerful, sublime and grandiose in art rock:

Close to the Edge
Starship Trooper
And You And I
Awaken
Machine Messiah
Leave it
the Order of the Universe
Magnification, etc, etc.

Pink Floyd definitely.
And I think they will crush their opponents as they are the only one of those band that are slightly mainstream.

Used to listen to Floyd a lot a few years ago, but in the long run art rock gets tedious due to all the noises. It's neither relaxing when smoking weed nor good music to actively listen to. Like some other guy said, I'd pick Tool over most these guys as well.

REM (no idea if they count, early years!)
Genesis (the far out stuff from the 70's)

How about Led Zepplin and Deep Purple? They got a bit arty-farty.

I had to go on the wiki link to learn what the hell "art rock" is. I don't like it. I don't like Pink Floyd..Rush..Styx...none of that shit for me.

I think Queen would be the best of the "art rock" bands from back in the stone ages.

Today--I would vote for Radiohead. The Mars Volta should be contenders. Same with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs..
