Mysterious gigantic eyeball washes up on Florida beach
A gigantic eyeball washed up on the shore of Pompano Beach, Florida last week baffling scientists and flooding the blogosphere with theories as to whom or what was the owner. The eye was found by a man walking along the beach on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 and the story was reported to media outlets on Friday.
Was it from the mysterious giant squid, big foot, unknown sea creature or alien? No one really knows at this time. However, Sonke Johnsen, a biology professor from Duke University, wrote an email to a colleague stating that he was “fairly sure it’s just the eye of a large scombrid, likely a swordfish or marlin. They get seriously big, but people don’t realize it because most of the eye is inside the head."
According to a lot of chatter over the internet, the most popular theory is leaning toward the giant squid. Despite being the largest invertebrate on the planet, the giant squid remains a mystery to scientists and marine biologists. The biggest creature found so far was 59 feet long and weighed about a ton. Also, a giant squid’s eye can become as big as a beach ball.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sent the eye to the research institute in St. Petersburg, Florida for genetic testing.
