Movie Innovations That Never Were

I love my movies. I love the escapism, I love the idea of new things, seeing things we haven't seen yet and people doing the unimaginable.

But what we also get are the tools people use, whether it be some amazing sci fi technology or the simplest little gadget.

Wasn't that long ago flight of fancy became real when Jim Kirks communicator became the mobile phone.

What else have seen in movies, that would be perfectly feasible in real life, yet was never followed through?

Perhaps a random first example.

Vasquez' smart gun on the waist swivel mount in Aliens (1986).

Wouldn't something like this in todays military have some reasonable applications? I'm not suggesting the marines kick open doors with 4 -5 foot long cannons, but that amount of portable firepower could come in handy.

I want a laptop that works like Tony Stark's PC...uh... Holgraphic inter...uh...whatever he has ...I want that (laptop size to carry around).
I'll wait.
As for past Sci Fi I'm waiting to warp space (still) so I can go to Lunar Base 3 for some low-grav P-Ball, do Hawaii in the afternoon, catch some Papaya time on the beach, and get home in time to cook dinner on my PC.
Why work at a job when I can be a great consumer, Professional Grade?

Most of the vehicles shown in Nolan's Batman trilogy would be cool to have. I'm thinking primarily about the Bat, but I'm aware that having a flight vehicle with the rotor(s) on the underside, jets on the front, and a body made up of aerial flaps is in no way practical. The Batpod seems likes something that could possibly have a basis in reality, since you could implement the motor technology in things like motorcycles and dirt bikes, just on a vertical axis and using levers instead of handlebars. It seems someone already has attempted this as a project.

The smartgun? For about $17,000 you can get yourself a rudimentary rifle-mounted targeting system. They've been working on stuff like the smartgun obviously, and it probably won't be long before we see a version which is ready for combat.

Of course if you're just talking about a massive harness-mounted gun, and not the actual "smart" feature of the smartgun, well, it's just not really that great an idea. Rifles offer more than enough stopping power for human beings, and for armor you'd need, like, a vulcan cannon... and you wouldn't want one of those strapped to you. Minus feed and ammo the guns alone weigh over 200lbs... easier just to pack a LAW.

The mount like in the movie would probably be a pain in the ass to aim. An even bigger problem and one that often gets overlooked except by people that have to carry it is the amount and weight of ammo that a person would need to carry for it. If it's not going to shoot large rounds then it's not too much more useful than a standard rifle.

The Yautja Cloaking Device. Imagine the possibilities.

Why save the world, when you can rule it?

Vasquez's gun is a terrible idea.
Didn't stop a M.O.D. scientist from wasting a bit of money investigating it, to the disgust of a former soldier who was sitting with me when we discovered that fact.
Infantry firepower needs to be small enough to allow them to take cover, not like a waist-bracket mounted... whatever the fuck that's supposed to be (It's actually a camera arm).

So what would I like to see? Liquid metal, like the Terminator 2.
Why? I'm sure it could be useful for somethig. Car bumpers for example.
Soon, I hope.
I loved Logan's run.
