movie decades

The 80'

But the 50' and 60' were great either.

The 70s are the Golden Era of Cinema:
Godfather
Godfather Part II
Apocalypse Now
A Clockwork Orange
Taxi Driver
The Exorcist
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Alien
Dirty Harry
Star Wars
Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Rocky
Chinatown
Blazing Saddles
The French Connection
Deliverance
Enter the Dragon
Straw Dogs

The 20's.

That's when Hollywood started to define itself and became the "Land of Dreams."

Plus...that's when the greatest movie star of all time (Douglas Fairbanks) did his best stuff.

Spleen

Banned?
70's, 90's and 00's.

I know some people are going to disagree with my last two choices, especially the 00's, but those pretentious little cunts can fuck right off.

Conspiracy...
The 80's had good movies. The 70's and 90's were not bad.

Mostly it has been a good movie here and good movie there.

With a lot of garbage in between.

You make a compelling case (I'd include The Sting and Le Mans too). So I'll go with you on the 70's - and the 60's would have to be right there too: Grand Prix, Winning, Cool Hand Luke, The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven, etc. I think all of those were made in the 60's.

Also, doesn't it seem like there were a lot less "formula movies" in the 60's and 70's compared to now? By "formula movies" I mean, more often than not, I can tell how a modern (U.S. made) movie is going to play out about 15 minutes in. I think they rely on too many focus groups and give the audience what it wants/expects, rather than just telling the story in a way that would make the viewer think.

I have to go with the 70s also.

Just to me, that decade grew in leaps and bounds that have not been touched upon since. Writing styles with telling a very good story. Special effects that make a lot of today's FX crews scratching their heads. With the exception to some 80s movies, this is, to me, the last great decade of supurb acting.

I used to watch several young kids for some of my old co-workers. Those kids favorite movies are now are a lot of the movies from what Basedow listed.

Outside of Cohen Brothers, Spike Lee, Oliver Stone, Michael Mann, and David Simon there just aren't any cinematic story tellers anymore

the 70's was a time when people made movies to make good movies, in the years since, movies are primarily made to make money. there are so few good movies these days, but in the 70's there was an abundance of great movies. that was the best movie era ever
