I've had a few bikes and definitely think that Harleys are overrated and overpriced. I would take any of the big 4 Japanese manufacturers equivalents for performance, reliability and quality.

My everyday bike in the summer is a Honda CBR 600. I also have a black customized 2003 MV Agusta F4-740S that is just ******. A world of difference between those two bikes.

I don't know that I would go with a Fatboy for long rides either. They ride alright, but they aren't really for touring. If you are looking to go for medium length rides, it surely is much better then any sportbike, but for longer rides (trips and such) you might want to think about a Roadking, or an Electraglide. If you plan on traveling extensively, think about a Goldwing. BMW makes a bigger more relaxed version of the K1100, I forgot the name, but it's supposed to be a very luxurious ride. I have an old Low Rider I have spent all day on, and I'll tell you this, it'll beat you up after 8 or 10 hours.
