More important things than short grass!!!

I am so tired of lawn care...and spring just started.

It's all I can do to keep up with just mowing my lawn...let alone worry about weeds and fertilizers and aerating and using the weed eater and who knows what else these other obsessed people do.

I work, I'm in graduate school, I have a ******, and I do like a little time to just relax... I'm get sick of coming home and seeing all these perfectly manicured lawns on my block...and then...mine.

Right now, my lawn is about 6 inches high, and full of dandelions and other assorted stuff that shouldn't be there. Sometimes I feel really guilty that I'm not making more of an effort to make it look better...but I've only got so much time in a day to work, study/write for school, and do yardwork...so, something has to slide. Then, I get pissed that I have this b.s. guilt imposed on me.

Oh, not to mention the row of hedges at the side of my house that are growing way out of control and need to be trimmed/torn out.

Unfortunately, due to being in school, I can't even afford to pay someone else to do the yard work and spray for weeds and all that other stuff. Hell, I can't even afford gas for my mower this week...

What REALLY sucks is the town I live in...if you don't keep up with your mowing, you can get a ticket from the city. And, if it gets too bad, they will ticket you AND mow it for you. (and then charge you for mowing it!)

Sometimes I wish my house was far enough out of the city that I could just let the lawn grow wild...turn it into a prairie...:o

I heard a story on the radio one day about this guy who was actually the mayor of some little town down in Kentucky...apparently he wasn't too good about keeping up with his yard work either. So...he put a sign out in his front yard that read, "There are more important things than short grass!"
Man I wish I had the nerve to do that...:D

I would keep up with it, even though you don't like doing it. If nothing else, you'll keep a good relationship with your neighbors. Looking at it from their perspective, they probably paid good money to buy their houses. Everyone wants to keep the property values in the neighborhood as high as possible, to make good on their investment. People view cosmetic issues like unmowed lawns as dragging down the property values. Trust me, both of my parents are obsessive lawn care people...and you do not want to be THAT GUY in your neighborhood. If you let the yard go, you'll notice a change in the way people act toward you...and if they're really stupid about it, they will call the city and report you. :(

I love the smell of freshly cut grass.
It is one of the true signs that spring is here.

Common grasses here are usually pretty scrappy looking up close. But I do it myself, a little every day, or when I see something that needs attention. I cut it depending on the rainfall, or when it starts to look shaggy. I have one spot that grows a Bermuda type grass very quickly so will sometimes hit that quick and leave the rest.

I would think for $20-$30 you can probably get someone to do it once a week.

I just wish they would genetically engineer grass blades that only grew a few centimeters tall. :1orglaugh

The weeds in my yard don't bother me that much. If it weren’t for them nothing would be there.

There are people that would actually pay that much a week to have somebody mow their lawn?

I just bought a house so for the first time in over 5 years I gotta start mowing again. Already a pain in my ass, actually back, but it's nice to have a pretty yard. A shitty looking yard is just...well...shitty!

Congratulations and welcome to the world of property tax. :)

You can buy a tractor if your lawn is going to take over an hour with a walk behind mower.

Hey thanks! Fuck property taxes!:1orglaugh

Takes about 45 minutes but I have a bullshit hill down to the neighbors yard, that I can to find out is actually my property! I don't want that ****! Awww...fuck! Mowing that ***** my back and it's only a 3 foot slope!

Can you go the long way across the slope? That way you're not going up and down, and down and up.

I tried that the first time I cut the grass...it's to steep! Mower won't stay straight and it really looks like ****! So I settle for standing at the top and lowering the mower down and pulling it back up:mad:

At least it's a short hill only 3 foot or so!

grass is not trees!

I just moved from Phoenix were it would get close to 120 during the summer. I hated cutting the grass because of the extreme heat.

I would lower my lawn mower to the lowest setting and give it a buzz cut. I'd water for about 20 minutes after cutting. I had brown grass but I didn't care. It was neat brown grass. I only had to cut the grass once every 3 weeks.

I also love to cut the grass on windy days. I go bagless and blow everything into the street. When I'm finished the grass clippings get blown away. No sweeping and going bagless saves me 30 minutes of cutting. Just a few tips.

I feel your pain. Good luck.

True!

But racking is a bitch!

Mulch it. It's better for the lawn to leave the clippings, especially in low fertility soils like sand in AZ.

Are you kidding me??? I realize for some people $100+ a month is nothing... But for some of us, that's a couple weeks worth of groceries, or the monthly electric bill. :(
