MLB 2009 thread

yes Desperation does work in the Dodgers favor. The Pirates would be one team they could fleece.

They could get someone from the Pirates, but I don't think there's anyone in their rotation that would be worth getting at this point.

I could see maybe a Mike Hampton, a Dave Bush, or a Braden Looper coming over however, but none of those are all that awe inspiring.

You know with the Angels they have played well for so long you just expect them to come right out of the blocks and win games

Eh, right now it's hard to project that when Torii Hunter and Mike Napoli are the best offensive players they've got, and the rest of the team is actually playing to expectation so far.

well actually shayd paul malholm would be a pitcher to get from the Pirates he might not put a team over the top but a guy who is constient ala joe blanton last year to the phillies helps just as much

He certainly could be had, but I don't think the Dodger have the pieces to get him. The Pirates right now are actually (finally) stockpiling talent in the minor to try to get a contender. Plus, the Dodgers already have a poor-mans Malholm in Eric Milton.

Disscussing the Dodgers?

First off, the Padres wont trade Peavy in the division unless the Dodgers give up a shit load of players.

Secondly, the Pirates wont trade Malholm because he is pitching good, he is young, and they are rebuilding.

The problem with the Dodgers right now, is that even though they are getting good starting pitching, the starters arent going deep into games, thus taxing the bullpen.

I think we could use another starter, but dont know if anyone avalible is worth it. We are still trying to figure out what Jason Schmidt is going to do.

I am impressed so far with my Tigers, which many picked to finish last in the AL Central. But They are struggling to beat teams in the east so far. But I still have high hopes!

GO TIGERS!

Is anybody here even remotely surprised that Sammy Sosa was using a performance enhancing substance?

Anybody?

Bueller??

I disagree with that. They traded McLouth, who is nearly the same age as Maholm, and was signed to a club-friendly contract, all for prospects. The Pirates are rebuilding, which makes Maholm their best chip right now. If a potential deal to the Dodgers were to arise and then fall through, it would be because the Dodgers don't have the prospects.

and Malholm is the Pirates most attractive Pitcher for a contender since he has actuall talent and wins consiently on the Pirates terrible teams.Zack Duke would also be a candidate. The Giants have even more Pitching but will never trade with the Dodgers

The reason they traded McClouth is because McCutchen was waiting in the minors.

They arent going to trade away young pitching (one of the most important aspects of rebuilding) unless they feel Maholm isnt going to improve or if someone gives up an awful lot for him (which they wont)

It is miserable year to be a Cubs fan

Worse to be a Jays fan right now (although they're only 15 years removed from winning a World Series, not 100, so in the grand scheme nothing is more miserable than being a Cubs fan). Halladay and Downs placed on the DL today. Good riddance.

Halladay on the DL doesn't help your cause at all, that's for sure, but how in the world did you loose three at home to those Marlins? Seems at least you righted the ship a little with two wins at Philly.

Penny looked everything else than sharp yesterday, but somehow made it to the end of the fifth (almost) unscathed, giving up just one unearned run. That was a little Houdini act, but our great bullpen shut the door on the fish for good. Even with Youk and Bay (combined 0-8 and 5 Ks) completely out of the game there was enough offense. 500th sellout, go Sox!

Eh, McCutchen waiting was more of a bonus in the trade for the Pirates. McCutchen offensively has been ready to make it to the big club for almost a full year now, the only reason he's been in the minors is because he plays defense worse than Derek Jeter (that is to say, terribly). A good amount of his playing time in the minors the past year has been trying to get him at least average defensively, or to try to see if he could play a corner OF position. If McCutchen was such a big factor, there was really no reason for the Pirates to resign sign McLouth in the first place, as they would've received pretty substantial draft picks as compensation in a couple years (he most likely would have been a Type A FA), and gotten McCutchen up to the majors in one move (or lack thereof). The reason the deal went down is because to put it lightly, the Pirates got blown away in terms of the package they received. Everything I've read and heard since suggests that McLouth would've fetched at best a C+ prospect, instead, the Braves needed offense, and gave two a B+ and two C+/B- prospects for it. The Pirates, if they are serious about rebuilding, would be wise to look to move Maholm. He's 26, arbitration eligible soon, and he's basically the only lock in the Pirates rotation to be above average. To be blunt, the Pirates need more young talented pitching if they're rebuilding. Keeping one talented guy in his prime isn't going to help the cause, as most of the core young guys won't be up for another year or two.

i wonder if Brad Penny is feeling extra pressure to perform?, because John Smotlz is back on the 25 or 26 and Brad might get traded to make room for John

Hey Rodfarva
Jays just beet the Phillies for the third night in a row
what gives.
GO JAYS

Mets are playing inconsistent BBall right now. If not for Phillies poor play they may be out of the playoffs picture by the All Star break. If those injured players can just hurry back this team will miss the PO yet again.
