Mexico wants to sue U.S. gun makers
April 21, 2011 - Posted by CBS News Investigates

CBS News has learned that the Mexican Government has retained an American law firm to explore filing civil charges against U.S. gun manufacturers and distributors over the flood of guns crossing the border into Mexico.

Sources say Mexico's frustration with U.S. efforts to stop the flow of weapons has pushed them into this novel approach. The law firm is looking at charges that may include civil RICO. The contract was signed on November 2, 2010 by a representative of Mexico's Attorney General, at their Washington embassy.

On November 5, 2010 President Felipe Calderon expressed his frustration to CBS News correspondent Peter Greenberg: "We seized more than 90,000 weapons...I am talking like 50,000 assault weapons, AR-15 machine guns, more than 8,000 grenades and almost 10 million bullets. Amazing figures and according to all those cases, the ones we are able to track, most of these are American weapons."

According to sources, investigators will obtain makes and serial numbers of guns seized by Mexican authorities and trace them to their U.S. distributors and manufacturers.

Christopher Renzulli of New York, who has represented U.S. gun makers for fifteen years, says he believes this would be a difficult case for the Mexican government to win. "The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act would bar that kind of lawsuit from the start. The law, passed in 2005 has resulted in several lawsuits against gun makers being dismissed.

But sources familiar with the case say the law firm retained by Mexico - New York based Reid Collins & Tsai - believes the federal law won't stand in the way of their case.

According to the Mexican government database, there were 15,273 drug-related killings in 2010.Overall, a total of 34,612 people have died in drug-related killings in the four years since Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared a stepped-up offensive against drug cartels.

Richard Feldman, President of the Independent Firearms Association and former gun industry association executive said: "Maybe we should be suing the Mexican government for their failure to prevent drugs from coming into our country."

oh yea... almost forgot the gratuitous :ak47: @ OP re: 'walking' - 'innit' just another example of a policy and tactic done all the time in LE?

Thing is...it's probably the case no major busts have occurred as a result of the operation because some blabber mouth, low level agent spilling the beans on CBS and tipping off the cartels to an undercover operation.:dunno:

But shouldn't Mexico sue China since their guns are all Made in China??!

easy....shoot the messenger /

:yahoo: problem solved ;)

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
The gun manufacturers should stamp a disclaimer on the barrel of every weapon made....

"this weapon not for use in Mexico, or by any low life scumbag outside of the USA."

I think the gun makers should sue Mexico, and it's government, for defamation, and slander. Lets face it, at least 95% of all of the guns in Mexico, come from corrupt police, and government officials.

The law firm that's been hired, should be charged with treason, and the lawyers hanged for their crimes against the Constitution. Every American should refuse to purchase anything made in Mexico, and should boycott them as a vacation resort spot. We should close, and lock the border, and allow them to be a forgotten wasteland, that slowly spirals into an agonizing demise.

I'm getting just a little fucking tired of hearing from this cunt they call a president, and even more tired of the socialist fucktards in our government that find passing ANY additional gun laws, acceptable. Hillary, Biden, and Obama, are clearly socialist, and find the Constitution to be nothing more then an obstacle to be destroyed on there way to creating a one world government, that answers only to the greedy, corrupt pieces of shit at the UN.

Hiliary 2020
dig a trench with all kinds of deadly stuff, spikes, electricity, mines, quicksand.......and have it patrolled by trucks.
thats all it would take........the GOV doesn't want to though.....or at least the people who control it.......they want the country over run with poor mexicans.
more crime= more police and law enforcement = higher taxes= bigger gov.
more welfare folks= more taxes=bigger gov
more people in the lower income workforce= lower wages=more profit= more real us citizens on welfare= more taxes=bigger gov.

as far as the lawsuit, lets see what happens.

Torn & Frayed.

There's a joke in there somewhere...

....and it's also fucking pathetic that a U.S. Law firm would take the case.

It's not entirely that wacky.

Various US states sued tobacco companies once upon time and won. Same thing IMHO. ;)

American states suing American tobacco companies....makes sense to me.

Mexican government suing American gun companies with the aid of an American law firm, not so much.

So, basically the Mexican government is hiring a group of people that are not natives to their country to do the work?

Hmmmm......

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
I don't guess they've considered suing the American based banks that help the cartels launder money, have they? Nah, wouldn't want to do that. That might put a dent in the other parts of the Mexican blackmarket and cause the flow of bribes to slow down. All Colt, Smith & Wesson and Ruger have to do is start sending fat envelopes to El Jefe Calderon's home and I'm sure this can be made to go away. A guy who worked for a company I was familiar with got caught in a motel room with a 15 year old Mexican hooker near Mexico City. He paid off the right people (about $20K U.S., or so I heard) and that went away. So if a pedo can get the Mexican legal system to turn a blind eye, seems like we could find an "amicable solution" to this too.

Oh, and BTW, I believe now is the time for the U.S. government to cut off ALL military and foreign aid to Mexico. The Zetas have been seen and caught carrying M-16's, not just (civilian) AR-15's. So clearly, our aid is just helping the drug cartels to be better armed. Since Calderon mentioned hand grenades, clearly those are also part of the military goods that we've sold and given them. This must be the case, since we know that private American citizens cannot purchase or possess (newly manufactured) M-16's or hand grenades. So let's help him out: cut off ALL aid and assistance.

I've been saying all along, more then 90% of these gangs weapons are coming form the Southern border and from Calderon's own corrupt police and military. This is all about one thing, and one thing only. Usurping the Constitution, disarming Americans, and shoving the UN's no gun policy down our throats. There are no loop holes, just law breakers...and those that are caught, should suffer a far worse penalty then they do...but no law abiding American, shouldn't have to. If Calderon is so concerned about the flow of guns, HE SHOULD SECURE HIS BORDER. I keep my yard free and clean of trash, and never let it into my neighbors yard...he should do the same. We should close the border, and secure it with enough National Guardsmen, and fire power, to send those filthy cocksuckers back to the stone age.

They need to sue the ATF and Holder for facilitating the murder of hundreds of Mexicans.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/03/03/eveningnews/main20039031.shtml

Say what you will about the 2nd Amendment, but the Federal Government facilitated murder. Where is the Brady Bunch on that matter?

I would appreciate it, if you could go into more detail, and recount specific instances regarding this statement please. I want to be clear about what you mean, and how I might respond.
