Someone probably mentioned this idea already but...
I belong to this other forum where they have a little indicator light under the avatar. When a forum member is on it is green and red when they are away. I know some members like to talk to eachother. There are other ways to tell if a buddy is on but the indicator light was something I liked. Here is a link to the forum with the little light.
