Mel Smith - Dead

A fantastic British comedian died aged 60 yesterday from a heart ******. He starred in one of the greatest UK comedies of all time back in the early eighties 'Not The Nine O'Clock News' - one of the TV highlights of my youth.

He's the one with the balding long hair in the clips.

Even for those that may have been slightly too young for NTNOCN which launched the careers of him, GRJ, Pamela Stephenson and Rowan Atkinson, Smith's influence of British comedy was an enduring one. Smith and Jones together created Talkback Productions, which made a number of much-loved comedies - among them Da Ali G Show, I'm Alan Partridge and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

So, Englishmen, next time you tell a friend "don't forget your big plate" or shout "DAN!!" repeatedly at any poor sod that happens to have that name, doff your cap to Mel.

That's sad. I used to love NTNOCN. One of my favorite regular sketches was Mel and Chris as the two blokes in the pub discussing world events. They'd get everything comically wrong and draw ridiculous conclusions. I vaguely recall one of these involved a discussion on test tube babies where both of them hadn't a clue what they were talking about. Very funny.
